RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Doctoral candidate Muhammad Ittefaq’s co-authored study titled “Editorial Journalism and Environmental Issues in the Majority World” has been accepted for publication in International Journal of Communication. The study examined editorial journalism coverage of environmental issues in the mainstream English newspapers of four majority world countries (i.e., China, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) amid the COVID-19 pandemic by using mixed method. Ittefaq co-authored this work with Shafiq Ahmad Kamboh from University of the Punjab and Dr. Muhammad Yousaf from University of Gujrat, Pakistan.

Wichita Gridiron Scholarships: Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. The KC Ad Club’s 2022-23 Foundation Scholarship is now open. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Deadline is March 4. Learn more and apply.

The Inez Y. Kaiser Greater Kansas City-Public Relations Society of America Memorial Student Scholarships portal is open for 2022 applications. The deadline is March 11. The scholarships are in recognition of Inez Kaiser’s national legacy as the first Black woman to join PRSA in 1966 and the 75th anniversary of PRSA. Black junior or first-semester seniors enrolled in a public relations or communications program at an accredited college or university are eligible to apply. The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is an annual, renewable award for female identifying students of all disciplines admitted or attending the University of Kansas. A minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need is required. Special consideration is given to first-generation students and current or incoming residents of Watkins and Miller Halls. Awards are $4,000 annually for a maximum award amount of $16,000 per student. Fulbright Germany is offering its Berlin Capital Program for early-career American journalists and journalism students in September 2022. It affords an opportunity to delve into transatlantic issues, gain valuable cultural insights, expand professional networks, and develop skills for better “translating” the news of Europe to a U.S. audience. The University Daily Kansan is partnering with The Wall Street Journal, the School of Business and Flip'd for Wall Street Wednesdays, a series of events designed to enhance student engagement with The Wall Street Journal. Each event begins at 12:20 p.m. with a quiz on the main ideas encapsulated in articles and stories reported in The Wall Street Journal the previous week. This is followed by a short discussion led by a faculty expert on a recent story from the newspaper. The event concludes by 12:50 p.m. with prizes for the top three scorers on the quiz and a light snack. The next event is March 2. Learn more and register here.
