PTSA NEWS
RAISE THE TORCH FOR THE PTSA GRANTS PROGRAM!

Did you know that the ISPTSA is now accepting proposals for grants from IS teachers, staff, students, and parents to fund programs, supplies, and activities which enhance and enrich student learning? Last year alone, the Grants Program funded $12,000 in proposals meeting this criteria. Each semester the ISPTSA makes this program available to support ideas not otherwise funded. With the grant proposal submission process currently underway for this semester, you can RAISE THE TORCH to encourage learning and engagement at IS with a donation to the Fall Fundraiser today.

The ISPTSA Grants program is another example of how your donation to the ISPTSA comes to life through meaningful student experiences at IS! All donations to the Fall Fundraiser you give today are tax-deductible and 100% goes back to the IS community. To see a more robust list of what your donation will support, please click here.

We invite all families to participate in this campaign, because your contribution—no matter the amount—makes a difference! We ALL benefit from the community, academic excellence, and reputation our students were fortunate to join. This is our chance to give back and benefit from that legacy.

Choose a support level that works for you: Gold $500, Silver $250, Bronze $100, or define your own amount. For those families who can, we ask you to consider becoming a Titan Torch supporter with a donation of $1,000 or more.

All donations to the Fall Fundraiser you give today are tax-deductible and 100% goes back to the IS community.

Prefer to write a check? Fill out this donation form and mail it to the ISPTSA.

Questions? Please contact vpfundraising@isptsa.org.
Thank you for your consideration!
Go Titans!
MEMBERSHIP

Thank you to the 144 parents, teachers, and students who have joined ISPTSA so far. Our goal is 583 members, and we are just shy of 25% of the way there, so become a community supporter.

Last year we were the only high school in Washington with 100% PTSA membership. Can you believe that? Students can join too; everybody counts toward our goal. Did you know we have more than 17 students as members? Encourage your student’s teacher to join, and thank them for supporting ISPTSA if they have!

Our Annual Membership listing showing our support for our ISPTSA community will be in the October 4 Monday Messenger. Join now to get your name on the list.

SEEKING BUSINESS, OUTREACH & MEDIA MENTORS FOR TITAN ROBOTICS

Titan Robotics Club is looking for adult mentors to assist with our Business, Outreach, and Media teams. No experience with robotics is required, however, you should have a passion for spreading your interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business, and Arts.

Titan Robotics Club traditionally participates in FIRST Robotics competitions, and you can find out more about FIRST at www.firstinspires.org. Titan Robotics works toward the same goals as FIRST, whose vision is to "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders".

This year will be different, as we're working on offering virtual training and need assistance particularly for our Business, Outreach, and Media teams. Business works on fundraising, grants, and managing a budget. Outreach works to expand the reach of our team through outreach activities, and we're looking for creativity on how to launch virtual programs. Media works on the image of the club, including team t-shirts, photos and videos, website, and social media. If you have a passion for any of these areas, please let us know!

Time commitment varies depending on season, but the estimated minimum is one hour once a week (can be after business hours for those working). We're re-envisioning robotics this year, so would love to have additional input.

If you're interested please contact our lead mentor, Amy McIvor (amy@titanrobotics.net). Interested in more technical skills, including mechanical, programming, and data science? We always need more passionate mentors, just let us know that you're interested!
ISPTSA STILL IN NEEED OF VP COMMUNICATIONS

A possible co-VP is available to work with you.

THANKS TO ASB & ISPTSA FOR DISTRIBUTING 2027 T-SHIRTS!

Usually, 6th-graders get their class t-shirts during 6th-Grade Retreat, but since that wasn't possible this year, other plans had to be made. Thank you to ISPTSA and ASB for getting the Class of 2027 t-shirts out to students during last week's materials distribution days! Pictured in the t-shirts are Charlie Richardson and Morgan Castle.
IS CURRICULUM NIGHT

THIS Wednesday, September 30, 6:00 PM (and after, see below)

This year’s Curriculum Night will be an online event in which staff will record videos providing brief glimpses into themselves and the class. We will also be inviting all of our staff—not just teachers—to introduce themselves.

While the event will be accessible starting at 6:00 PM on September 30, you may access the videos at any time and in any order which you prefer. With this new structure, you may access Curriculum Night when it is convenient for you, and there is no need to choose between multiple classes if a family has more than one student at the school.

Curriculum Night will be a web-based event and can be viewed using any device that can access the internet. A link to open up the event will be emailed to families and students shortly before it begins.

STUDENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

The Bellevue Chamber and the Bellevue School District have partnered over the last several years providing an opportunity for students to consider participating in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy for the middle and high school students in the Bellevue School District. This year, we will begin the virtual class in October and it will run for four weeks. There is an application process and a fee associated with the program. We typically have 15–18 students participate. This year we will run two sessions, one in the fall and one in the spring. Hopefully, we can also have a summer program. The students learn all about the necessary steps to start a business from idea to business plan to pitch to investors. In addition, there is a national competition in the spring for one student to present to national corporate leaders. The applications will be due no later than October 5.

TITAN ROBOTICS CLUB FRC TEAM INTEREST MEETING—NEW DATE & TIME

Thursday, October 1, 7:00 PM on Teams
All high school students are welcome, regardless of prior experience, and parents are welcome too!

Interested in gaining extensive experience with STEM education? Join the Titan Robotics Club FRC team!

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a high school robotics program in which students work alongside adult mentors from the industry to design, fabricate, build, and program a robot in six weeks. With that robot, they participate in a series of competitions on the state, regional, and national level.

Well, usually we would.

Covid has changed a lot of things, but something that hasn’t changed is our commitment to your interest in STEM; we’re still working hard to make sure you can learn everything and more about STEM and robotics.

Besides mechanical and programming, our club also supports media, business, and outreach teams, allowing people of all different interests to develop and apply diverse skills. Titan Robotics FRC Team 492 has been greatly successful since its founding in 2000, often advancing to the world championships and making a profound impact on International School students.

Parents, if you believe your student would even be slightly interested, please encourage them to come!

We hope to see you there!

PARENTS, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR FREE CLASSES TAUGHT BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?

Hello Everyone, we are Rishi Chilamcharla (Junior at Bellevue High School) and Kaiser Williams (Junior at Bellevue High School), founders of CW Academy.

CW Academy was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic as a platform where children in elementary/middle school can explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and miscellaneous topics through free online courses taught by High School Students. We wanted students to keep learning & find a passion in many popular subjects while they were stuck at home.

So far, we’ve taught over 140 students in less than 90 days. Courses we have taught include introductory python 1, python 2, introductory java, biology, math tutoring, and more. We’ve gotten great feedback from parents and our students!

During the school year, we are going to keep providing free, fun online courses taught by High School students on the weekends. To inform parents about new course offerings and news about CW Academy, we have created a newsletter! When new courses are available, we will email you the newsletter! Click here to be added to our mailing list, or go to www.cwacademybellevue.com for more information!

Follow our Instagram @cwacademyglobal for updates as well!

We hope we can teach and inspire many more children during these unprecedented times!!

IS ALUMNA RECOMMENDS MEDITATION

My name is Makenna Ginn and I was a senior last year at the International School. I am currently studying acting at Loyola Marymount University in LA.

I remember being a senior and spending the first semester working on college applications and how stressful everything became. We always start my acting class with ten minutes of meditation and I have found that it is a great way to relieve stress and calm my mind.

I wanted to share the programs that I have been using in college with the IS student community. The videos that I have enjoyed the most can be found on YouTube under “Positive Energy 10 Minute Guided Meditation” by Great Meditation and “10 Minute Meditation for Anxiety” by Goodful. I hope that these videos are able to help relax anyone who feels they need it.

Self-Care & Taking in the Good to Combat Stressors during Remote Learning
Wednesday, October 7, 6:30–8:00 PM via Zoom (register below)

How do we help our teens navigate through these unchartered territories, make sure they are safe, and also maintain social interaction which is critical for mental health? How do we make sure their academic needs are being met and set expectations around this without being too overbearing? How do we balance our family time, work life, school life, and social life?

In this virtual 90 minute interactive seminar, Gina Biegel, LMFT, a psychotherapist, researcher, speaker, and author in the San Francisco Bay Area who specializes in mindfulness-based work with adolescents and is the founder of Stressed Teens, will guide us through some practical advice and practice to help us find grace and breathing room as we help our teens do the same.

With Gina’s experience working directly with teens, she will share with us her keen understanding of what our teens need most from us right now and best practices for meeting them where they are in ways that invite calm rather than conflict.
