MNPHA's 9th Annual Building Partnerships Conference was our focus for November, and it was a wonderful event, with ample networking and connectivity despite the virtual format. Thanks to all who attended! On the evening of November 22 we celebrated the Spirit of Housing Awards, which recognize our leader's success and achievements. Over the next several months we will highlight one Spirit of Housing Award per newsletter, with this month's being the Spirit of Achievement Award!
The Spirit of Achievement Award recognizes a tenant associated with an MNPHA housing provider member who made a meaningful contribution towards making their own non-profit a better place to live, the well being of their neighbourhood and fostered connections among tenants and others within their community. The 2021 Winner is Linda Sharpe!
Linda was born and raised in the West End and is a staunch advocate for the neighbourhood, citing community involvement as a healing aspect in a struggle with mental health. Her exceptional service spans from harm reduction walks, which involve supplying safe drug supplies to folks while cleaning up garbage, to hosting movie nights at West End Commons. Linda's endless contributions to the neighbourhood have created transformation and support where it is most needed. Thank you Linda, for your hard work, and congratulations!

Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 0V8
Further information on Budget 2022 public engagement is available at:
MNPHA’s budget submission outlines three priorities:
- Create a Capital Funding Program for Existing Community Housing
We suggest that the 2022 budget undertake an assessment of all non-profit housing to assess capital needs, and develop a capital program to bring existing buildings up to standard, and to return capital funding and asset management responsibilities to Manitoba Housing, rather than Shared Services.
- Create New Supply of Rent-Geared-to-Income Housing
We suggest that the 2022 budget invest in 3000 units of rent-geared-to-income housing to address the immediate housing need in Manitoba, with $500m in new dollars, and develop a Capacity Program/Fund that non-profit housing organizations can easily access to assist them to increase their capacity.
- Provide Consistent Resources for Tenant Support within Housing
We suggest that the 2022 budget extend the Housing Supports Initiative to a long-term and predictable funding program that will target health, mental health, and community development funding to create supportive housing models.
Over the medium-term, MNPHA requests that the provincial government work with the community housing sector to create a renewed funding model for new and existing social housing based on best practices, with a simplified rent subsidy model whereby rents (subsidized for the lowest income individuals and families) cover the costs of operations, capital maintenance, and renewal.
