SEPTEMBER 2017
My trip to the ME Botanical Gardens
I just returned from a dazzling trip to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. Sixteen years in the making and now celebrating its 10th anniversary, this treasure contains some of the most spectacular stonework and flora that I have ever seen.
Now that's a waterfall
A dramatic rush of water cascades over these huge stone slabs in the Coastal Maine's Rhododendron Garden. This water feature is but one of many throughout the gardens. See map of all the gardens here.

A very cool bench
I wanted to ship this granite "wave" bench from Maine to Wilmington to set in our Inspiration Garden. Alas, they were not willing to part with it. The bench sits in front of their visitor's center.

Two paths intertwined

I love this mixed stone path and the massive steps beyond it. The walkway is surrounded by large boulders and set off with lush ferns.

It leads to a meditation garden where an enormous carved-out boulder contains a tranquil pool of water, with its interior a dark, polished granite.

If you ever have time to visit Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens , you won't be disappointed.

Art in the Arboretum
Save the date Oct. 6-8
Speaking of public gardens, have you visited our local arboretum lately? The perfect opportunity awaits on October 6th through 8th at the 22nd Annual Art in the Garden fundraiser. A silent auction features some of the region's best art in town. Admission is only $5.

Stone Garden's donation will be this charming 30" cast limestone statue, "Flora" and also a free truckload of mulch. You can bid on these at the silent auction.
Painting Rocks
Last September, Janna Siegel Robertson founded 910 Rocks , a local organization that aims to spread joy through the element of surprise. Says Janna in her inspiring video , "It's really pretty simple: You get some rocks, you decorate them, you hide them." When found, you can take a photo and post it to the 910 Rocks Facebook page. But, says Janna, "it's really not about art. It's more about spreading kindness." Hide one for a friend, or better yet, for a stranger.

Janna's daughter, Jesse, painted this Border Collie rock for me. Stone Garden has teamed up with 910 Rocks by offering a discount to their members on our most paint-worthy stones.

Japanese Maples
I wanted to share a link to a weekly newsletter that provides great gardening tips and know-how. Check out the most recent edition by Outdoor Creations Landscaping which includes some interesting information on Japanese Maples and also some instructions for treating "brown patch" after heavy rain storms.
