PTSA NEWS
RAISE THE TORCH FOR CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT!

Did you know that the ISPTSA has budgeted about $50,000 this school year toward a wide range of grants which enrich the curriculum at IS? 80% of that total is recurring, meaning those grants are budgeted year after year, so teachers and faculty can depend on the funding as they plan their curriculum. Math, Science, French, Band/Orchestra/Choir, Art, PE, and the Library depend on grants each year, which means each and every student at IS benefits. RAISE THE TORCH for Curriculum Enrichment at IS with a donation to the Fall Fundraiser today.

To see a more robust list of what your donation will support, please click here. Note: With COVID-19, the school year looks very different, and some of the line items listed may not need the same financial support that we usually provide; we will try to support the school in other ways as requests come up.

We invite all families to participate in this campaign, because your contribution—no matter the amount—makes a difference! We ALL benefit from the community, academic excellence, and reputation our students were fortunate to join. This is our chance to give back and benefit from that legacy.

Choose a support level that works for you: Gold $500, Silver $250, Bronze $100, or define your own amount. For those families who can, we ask you to consider becoming a Titan Torch supporter with a donation of $1,000 or more.

All donations to the Fall Fundraiser you give today are tax-deductible and 100% goes back to the IS community.

Prefer to write a check? Fill out this donation form and mail it to the ISPTSA.

Questions? Please contact vpfundraising@isptsa.org.
Thank you for your consideration!

SEEKING BUSINESS, OUTREACH & MEDIA MENTORS FOR TITAN ROBOTICS

Titan Robotics Club is looking for adult mentors to assist with our Business, Outreach, and Media teams. No experience with robotics is required, however, you should have a passion for spreading your interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business, and Arts.

Titan Robotics Club traditionally participates in FIRST Robotics competitions, and you can find out more about FIRST at www.firstinspires.org. Titan Robotics works toward the same goals as FIRST, whose vision is to "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders".

This year will be different, as we're working on offering virtual training and need assistance particularly for our Business, Outreach, and Media teams. Business works on fundraising, grants, and managing a budget. Outreach works to expand the reach of our team through outreach activities, and we're looking for creativity on how to launch virtual programs. Media works on the image of the club, including team t-shirts, photos and videos, website, and social media. If you have a passion for any of these areas, please let us know!

Time commitment varies depending on season, but the estimated minimum is one hour once a week (can be after business hours for those working). We're re-envisioning robotics this year, so would love to have additional input.

If you're interested please contact our lead mentor, Amy McIvor (amy@titanrobotics.net). Interested in more technical skills, including mechanical, programming, and data science? We always need more passionate mentors, just let us know that you're interested!
2020 INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PTSA SURVEY

During this unique school year, the ISPTSA Board is reaching out to the IS community to better understand how we can best support you and your students throughout the challenges of the 2020-21 academic year.

Please take a few moments to respond to our short survey (only 10 questions!). Your feedback will help us prioritize the work that we do this year to support our International School community.

Thank you!
ARE YOU REALLY GOING MAKE US BEG?

We are still lacking key volunteers who are needed to keep things running smoothly and continue supporting our school community in the way we've all come to appreciate.

We need you now! PLEASE?
  • VP Communications
  • Advocacy, Committee Chair
  • Grants, Committee Chair
  • and many other positions, just ask how you can help!

And, remember, you can co-VP or co-Chair with someone else!

If you are ready to volunteer or just have questions, please contact VPOutreach@isptsa.org.

IS CURRICULUM NIGHT

Wednesday, September 30, 6:00 PM (and after, see below)

This year’s Curriculum Night will be an online event in which staff will record videos providing brief glimpses into themselves and the class. We will also be inviting all of our staff—not just teachers—to introduce themselves.

While the event will be accessible starting at 6:00 PM on September 30, you may access the videos at any time and in any order which you prefer. With this new structure, you may access Curriculum Night when it is convenient for you, and there is no need to choose between multiple classes if a family has more than one student at the school.

Curriculum Night will be a web-based event and can be viewed using any device that can access the internet. A link to open up the event will be emailed to families and students shortly before it begins.

A MESSAGE FROM INTERNATIONAL'S NEW HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR, COLLEEN COURTNEY:

I am excited to be joining International School as the high school counselor. I am looking forward to meeting as well as working with each of you this year.

I received a B.S. in Psychology from Boise State University and a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Seattle University. My background includes a wide variety of educational and counseling experiences. Seven years ago, I began my career as a paraeducator in the Bellevue School District and developed a passion for helping students succeed academically, emotionally, and socially. I have served as a part of the Interlake High School Counseling team, and most recently worked at the K&M Center, a Santa Monica private alternative school.

My husband and I are happy that we have returned to the Pacific Northwest. I feel fortunate to be back with the Bellevue School District to work with the exceptional teachers, administrative team, and parents in supporting each student's educational and personal goals. As their counselor during these challenging times, I will work to support their individual needs and help them achieve their academic goals.

Outside of school counseling, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Carter, and our dog, Addy. We enjoy all things outdoors and can’t wait for the upcoming ski season!
Please join us in welcoming Colleen to our International School community. Her email address is: courtneyn@bsd405.org (note: the first initial “n” not “c” as Nancy is her legal first name).

TITAN ROBOTICS CLUB FRC TEAM INTEREST MEETING

Tuesday, September 29, during lunch on Teams
All high school students welcome, regardless of prior experience

Interested in gaining extensive experience with STEM education? Join the Titan Robotics Club FRC team!

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a high school robotics program in which students work alongside adult mentors from the industry to design, fabricate, build, and program a robot in six weeks. With that robot, they participate in a series of competitions on the state, regional, and national level.

Well, usually we would.

Covid has changed a lot of things, but something that hasn’t changed is our commitment to your interest in STEM; we’re still working hard to make sure you can learn everything and more about STEM and robotics.

Besides mechanical and programming, our club also supports media, business, and outreach teams, allowing people of all different interests to develop and apply diverse skills. Titan Robotics FRC Team 492 has been greatly successful since its founding in 2000, often advancing to the world championships and making a profound impact on International School students.

Parents, if you believe your student would even be slightly interested, please encourage them to come! (Meeting invitation and link will be sent out to students next week)

We hope to see you there!

PARENTS, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR FREE CLASSES TAUGHT BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?

Hello Everyone, we are Rishi Chilamcharla (Junior at Bellevue High School) and Kaiser Williams (Junior at Bellevue High School), founders of CW Academy.

CW Academy was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic as a platform where children in elementary/middle school can explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and miscellaneous topics through free online courses taught by High School Students. We wanted students to keep learning & find a passion in many popular subjects while they were stuck at home.

So far, we’ve taught over 140 students in less than 90 days. Courses we have taught include introductory python 1, python 2, introductory java, biology, math tutoring, and more. We’ve gotten great feedback from parents and our students!

During the school year, we are going to keep providing free, fun online courses taught by High School students on the weekends. To inform parents about new course offerings and news about CW Academy, we have created a newsletter! When new courses are available, we will email you the newsletter! Click here to be added to our mailing list, or go to www.cwacademybellevue.com for more information!

Follow our Instagram @cwacademyglobal for updates as well!

We hope we can teach and inspire many more children during these unprecedented times!!
