Colonial High School

Today we conclude our first full week of 2020-2021 where we have had some of our Grenadiers back on campus through OCPS' Face-to-Face learning model. Thank you again to all of our students, parents, teachers, and staff for their help in making the return to campus run very smoothly overall. We have invested a lot of time this summer putting in place new health and safety procedures and that preparation is paying off.

This edition has an expanded College and Career Update which I especially encourage members of our senior class to look over carefully. The first nine-week quarter offers a number of opportunities with respect to college planning, but with that are important dates and deadlines to be aware of.

Finally, we look forward to seeing our fall athletics programs able to get underway on Monday! Our Grenadier student-athletes need to make sure that they have a completed physical submitted online (please see details below). Enjoy your weekend and please continue to practice all recommended health safety procedures when out in public.

It's Great To Be A Grenadier!

Colonial High School remembers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I have a dream" speech delivered fifty-seven years ago today (Aug. 28, 1963) to 250,000 people stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. Dr. King had a number of personal leadership traits that our Grenadiers can learn from but chief among them are two appropriate for early in the new school year: 1) Set goals and make a detailed plan of action to reach them - for yourself and your organization and 2) Stay awake to new ideas and have the courage to change.

Warren Buffett on what he gained from reading daily:
"Do what I have always done. Read 500 pages like this every day," Buffett once said to a group of college students who asked how they too could become very wealthy, as he was reaching toward a stack of manuals and papers. "That's how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it."

* Warren Buffet's rank among the richest people in America: #3
* Net Worth: $67.5 billion*
* Source of Wealth: Berkshire Hathaway
* Cost of 1 share of stock in Berkshire Hathaway: $325,659.00 as of Aug. 27th (4PM close)
* Buffet in High School: In high school he took odd jobs, from washing cars to delivering newspapers, using his savings to purchase several pinball machines that he placed in local businesses which was his first business (he always believed in saving and investing, even as a teen). He did not originally want to go to college, but his father pressed him to continue his education, with Buffett reluctantly agreeing to attend the University of Pennsylvania.

College Board's "BigFuture Tool"
Thinking of applying to college? Not sure what type of college or major is best for you? Wondering about the differences between public vs. private colleges or between a small liberal arts school and a large state school? Want to know college application deadlines? Curious to learn what those college admissions and financial aid terms mean? We're here to help.

College Board BigFutureā„¢ tool gives students free, comprehensive college planning resources. Make personalized college lists, save scholarship searches, and compare college costs at

Starting Your College Search
One of the first steps in the college planning process is to explore colleges. With thousands of choices, it's hard to know where to begin. Take these five steps to kick off your college search and start building a list.

1. Open up a discussion with your family, guardian, school counselor, or teacher about your interests and goals. Find out how you can start building a network and create a mentor/mentee relationship for advice and support. Talk to people who've been to college and learn about their experience.

2. Keep an eye out for college brochures and emails in your mailbox and inbox. This information gives you a better understanding of your options and can help you find the school that's right for you. If you're not receiving college mail yet, opt in to the College Board Student Search ServiceĀ® to connect with colleges and scholarship programs. To opt in, visit this page, sign into your College Board account, and click "Yes" in the blue section at the top of the page.

3. Attend college fairs held at your school, a nearby conference center, or a local community center. These events are an ideal way to meet college representatives and ask questions about student organizations or dorm life. Make sure to get email addresses so you can send thank-you notes later.

Here is an upcoming opportunity for any Grenadiers interested in attending FSU in the future.

4. Visit the college's website and social media accounts to get an idea of what campus life and classes are like. Get a glimpse of a college's day-to-day life through their Instagram and Snapchat accounts-from the comfort of your mobile device. Read 10 ways to learn about colleges online. A perfect way to make sure a college is the best fit for you is to visit the campus. Read The College Campus Tour Checklist  to get the most out of your visit!

5. Use your free College Board account, and build a college list with the College Search tool. Start your search today at: BigFuture.org

How to Build a College List
Here's a step-by-step guide to create a college list on BigFuture. With our College Search tool, check out individual college profiles based on what's important to you (e.g., location, majors, cost, test scores). When you find a college that's a good fit, add it to your list. Edit the list as you explore new college profiles.

When you're viewing a college profile like this UF example, you'll see:

1. This option Add To My List.
2. A list of colleges under "Others who also view:"
3. Information on the college at a glance, deadlines, majors & learning environment, campus life, applying, paying, and transfer and international student resources.

When you add colleges to your list and view them in My Colleges, you'll see:

1. Quick facts about the colleges, including graduation rate, average cost after aid, and total undergrads.
2. Option to add more colleges to your list.

What are you waiting for? Start your college search on BigFuture today. We're here for your entire journey - from your first thoughts about college to your first day on campus!
