Today we conclude our first full week of 2020-2021 where we have had some of our Grenadiers back on campus through OCPS' Face-to-Face learning model. Thank you again to all of our students, parents, teachers, and staff for their help in making the return to campus run very smoothly overall. We have invested a lot of time this summer putting in place new health and safety procedures and that preparation is paying off. This edition has an expanded College and Career Update which I especially encourage members of our senior class to look over carefully. The first nine-week quarter offers a number of opportunities with respect to college planning, but with that are important dates and deadlines to be aware of. Finally, we look forward to seeing our fall athletics programs able to get underway on Monday! Our Grenadier student-athletes need to make sure that they have a completed physical submitted online (please see details below). Enjoy your weekend and please continue to practice all recommended health safety procedures when out in public.

| | Colonial High School remembers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I have a dream" speech delivered fifty-seven years ago today (Aug. 28, 1963) to 250,000 people stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. Dr. King had a number of personal leadership traits that our Grenadiers can learn from but chief among them are two appropriate for early in the new school year: 1) Set goals and make a detailed plan of action to reach them - for yourself and your organization and 2) Stay awake to new ideas and have the courage to change. |

Prior Job: Taught test preparation (SAT, ACT, etc.), worked in corporate payroll and accounting.
College/Certifications: University of Florida - BA in Philosophy. Currently enrolled: University of Central Florida - MAT
Favorite Aspect of Work: Teaching critical thinking and other skills that students can use to improve their communities.
Personal Interests/Hobbies: I am a music lover, trivia nerd, and an enthusiastic, yet bad chess player.

Prior Job: Program Assistant for math and science at Ventura Elementary School
College/Certifications: UCF (Go Knights!)
Favorite Aspect of Work: Teaching the future and watching them flourish both in and out of the classroom.
Personal Interests/Hobbies: I love to travel and try new foods. A fun fact about myself is I am a weightlifting state champion from my time in high school and still have a couple state records to my name!

Prior Job: FLVS - Spanish Instructor for 6 years 2012-2018. Taught at OCPS and in private school at the elementary, middle and high school level from 2000-2012.
College/Certifications: UCF - Bachelor's in Accounting. UCF - Master's in Elem Ed; Elementary Education 1-6; ESOL K-12; Spanish K-12; and Mathematics 5-9.
Favorite Aspect of Work: Interacting with students and contemplating as they learn the content.
Personal Interests/Hobbies: Family time, reading, travel, quiet time.

Prior career: Engineer with Westinghouse Power Systems; Independent Consultant for Westinghouse Power Systems/Mitsubishi Power Systems in Kobe, Japan
College/Certifications: Certifications: Mathematics 6-12, Gifted Endorsed, OCPS Career and Tech Ed. Degrees: M.Ed Curriculum and Technology Grand Canyon University; B.S. Engineering University of Central Florida; and A.A. Engineering Daytona Beach State College
Favorite Aspect of Work: Math is an area in which you hear many students and adults frequently state "I am not good at math." My favorite aspect of teaching is seeing the confidence level of students rise as they master concepts that they had previously felt they were not good at - and they finally learn that they are in fact good at that topic, thus unlocking a new pathway of knowledge.
Personal Interests/Hobbies: My husband and I enjoy adventures on the Harleys and our 1950 Chevy Styleline Coupe, attending bike and classic car events. We also enjoy anytime we can spend on the water boating and fishing. We are proud parents to 5 wonderful adult children: 1 daughter currently serving in the US Coast Guard, stationed in Hawaii; 1 late daughter who was serving in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; 1 daughter working as a Manufacturing Engineer in Orlando; 1 son working in Hospitality Management in Kissimmee; 1 son working in Leesburg.

Dessa Rollins, Math Teacher - Geometry
College/Certifications: Went to Rollins College, majored in Mathematics.
Favorite Aspect of Work: I enjoy helping students, whether that be math-related or with anything.
Personal Interests/Hobbies: I swam for four years at Rollins, have a small dog named Nugget, and I enjoy lifting weights.

Fall Sports Start Monday, August 31st
The Orange County School Board approved a plan last night that allows fall sports to move forward starting on Monday, August 31st.
The fall sports include: Football, Bowling, Cross Country, Girls Volleyball, Golf, and Swimming.

Curbside Meals for LaunchEd Students
We will be serving breakfast and lunch meals on Monday after school at the Colonial High School Main Campus from 2:50 PM to 4:20 PM and on the Colonial High School Freshman Campus from 2:40 PM to 4:10 PM. This meal service is only available for students who are enrolled in Colonial High School. We will be utilizing a Point of Sale system to identify students so they will either need their student ID or student number. All meals are free of charge.

Starting Your College Search
One of the first steps in the college planning process is to explore colleges. With thousands of choices, it's hard to know where to begin. Take these five steps to kick off your college search and start building a list.
1. Open up a discussion with your family, guardian, school counselor, or teacher about your interests and goals. Find out how you can start building a network and create a mentor/mentee relationship for advice and support. Talk to people who've been to college and learn about their experience.
2. Keep an eye out for college brochures and emails in your mailbox and inbox. This information gives you a better understanding of your options and can help you find the school that's right for you. If you're not receiving college mail yet, opt in to the College Board Student Search Service® to connect with colleges and scholarship programs. 3. Attend college fairs held at your school, a nearby conference center, or a local community center. These events are an ideal way to meet college representatives and ask questions about student organizations or dorm life. Make sure to get email addresses so you can send thank-you notes later.
