She leads the design of year-round floral display in Canada's Capital, which includes the Canadian Tulip Festival in the spring, and annual and perennial displays from summer to autumn. Liu's presentation, entitled The Tulip Legacy and 75 years of Tulip Design in Canada's Capital, will explore how design strategies constantly evolve and adapt to various cultural, social, economic, and climatic changes throughout the year, and how the NCC lives up to being the world's largest spring flower show destination in public parkland and home of the largest Tulip Festival in North America.

COST: Admission is free. Registration is required to obtain the link to the meeting's platform.

The joy of water and gardens
Wander in to the rock garden and reflect

The water feature at the Ornamental Gardens has been an especially popular attraction this year!

Completed in October 2019, this wonderfully upgraded and serene corner is located in the Rock Garden and was made possible by a generous donation from the late John T. Connor. "When John drew up his will," said his widow Pamela Burns, "he decided to designate a sum for the Friends to be used to enhance the gardens. And in his obituary, it was requested that donations in his memory be made to the Friends. This was so appropriate. He believed gardens are a joy for everyone. They offer beautiful spaces for people to wander in and reflect."

The upgraded water feature is dressed with river stone, rock, and boulders. A small Chinese pagoda and plantings here and there add visual impact, enhancing the rock garden site.

If the number of visitors to this beautiful garden is any indication, the water feature has created and will provide a place of enjoyment, reflection, and tranquility for years to come.

September 2020 tree tour
Nut trees in the Dominion Arboretum

Sunday September 20, 2020
10:00 a.m., rain or shine!
(limited to 20 spaces; masks must be worn)

Trees produce seeds, nuts, and other fruit as part of their normal reproductive cycles. Many trees rely on other organisms to help spread those seeds and ensure survival and evolution of the species.

A byproduct of this process is the great appeal of tree seeds and fruits to humans.

This tour, led by Robert Glendinning, will showcase some interesting nut trees in the Arboretum and explain what these trees have to offer and what we need to protect.

Given the challenges of COVID-19, all attendees must wear a mask and observe physical distancing protocols with other attendees, except members of the same household.

All tours start at Building 72 in the Arboretum. Although the tours are free and open to the public, you must register in advance. Email [email protected] for more information.

*Please note: Space is limited. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing [email protected], so that we may pass along your place to another participant.

Volunteer Spotlight
More than 10,000 hours donated each year

Did you know that Friends of the Farm volunteers donate more than 10,000 hours every year to support our mission and activities? Every month we highlight a different volunteer on the Friends website. We invite you to read the stories of generous people like Susan Kehoeour Volunteer of the Month

Previous spotlights are also listed. Each volunteer has an interesting story to tell and a unique connection and commitment to the Farm. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by the entire community and we thank them!
