I’m feeling optimistic now, and I hope you are too, after many months of fear and questioning. We have started construction on our new venue, and although completion will be months away, the goal is in sight. My heart is filled with gratitude for the enthusiasm and support that we have received for our project, and I look forward to being able to offer art and music and theatrical experiences at the Center as soon as possible.
We will have a first event at the Center (outside) on June 20. Hope you can join in the fun, either as a listener or a participant. In the meanwhile, I hope you will enjoy our new virtual art exhibit, and our YouTube premiere of Songwriters Showcase at Turner Hall.

Virtual Exhibit
Celebrating Summer
|
|
Suddenly it’s summer! Time to relax and enjoy the warm weather with vacations and celebrations. We are all ready to get outdoors to play and attend all the art shows and festivals that were cancelled last year.
For our virtual exhibit, forty-one artists have captured the spirit of the season in photographs, paintings, sculptures, fiber art, poetry, and mixed media. They have represented the glorious lushness of fields, gardens, and produce at farmers markets; wildlife, both real and fanciful; water in fountains, lakes, oceans, and even spouting from a garden hose. There are celebrations of all sorts: fireworks and fireflies, children playing, and marshmallows roasting over a fire.

We will have two Songwriter Showcase events in June! |
|
The Galena Center for the Arts created the “Songwriters Showcase” seven years ago to feature and promote the talented musicians from the tri-state area. In spite of the craziness of the last year, the Showcase has been able to continue with YouTube Premieres that have been well received by our music loving friends.
This month’s first musical event will air on Wednesday, June 2 at 7pm. This YouTube Premiere was recorded at Turner Hall with a small audience and features Scott Guthrie, Twinray, and Jay Vonn.

Celebrate music with
the whole world!
Sunday, June 20, 8pm

If you have ever wanted to be a part of making music, we have the event for you! Join us for “Fete de la Musique” on June 20, outdoors on the grounds of the new site for the Galena Center for the Arts, 971 Gear Street. This will be our first event at the new venue.
Otherwise known as international Make Music Day, people in over 120 countries will be unified in celebrating the joy of music. We invite bands, singers, professional and amateur musicians, drummers, and dancers, to express themselves through music. Bring your voice, your acoustic instruments and your dancing shoes, to join in the fun as we jam and singalong. Solos are welcome too!

Theater Camp
Youth Acting Class
|
Do you know someone who loves being in the school play but wants more time to work on the craft of acting? Have them join us for a 5-day intensive acting class where we will have fun with theater games, explore improv skills and dive into some scene study work. The week will end with a lunchtime showcase so friends and family can see them perform. |
|
When: July 26-30th
M-F 8:30am-noon
Where: Turner Hall, 115 S Bench Street, Galena, IL
Ages: 12-15 years old.
Cost: $100 per student, scholarships available.
Class size limited to maximum of 12.

Instructor: Cindy Tegtmeyer has a BFA in Acting from Millikin University. She was a professional actress, SAG-AFTRA voice-over artist and youth acting teacher in Chicago for over 20 years. Cindy also toured as a clown with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. She has performed locally at Bell Tower Theater, the Galena History Museum, Cemetery Walk and a few productions at Galena Center for the Arts. |

As an artist, Diane finds ice and snowy places among the most wonderful subjects for her artistic endeavors. Photographs from travels around the world are all intriguing subjects. During this COVID-19 pandemic she has not been traveling, so has had more time to paint. One could say Diane has been prolific, as she has done seventeen paintings since January. Her easel is in their sunroom, because she needs light and comfort for inspiration. |
|
Most recently Diane has embarked on painting Eagle Ridge Resort scenes: an eagle soaring above the famous General Golf Course, the colorful flower display in front of the new Highlands Restaurant, the rustic barn that is on the eleventh hole of the North Course. And since she loves the water, she has also painted lighthouses and boats, resting at their moorings in the harbor. All of it is a challenge, but to get it right gives her great satisfaction. |

Area Art Shows
Along with the forty-one artists who are showing in our current virtual show, “Celebrating Summer,” many of the artists who have shown artwork with us in the past are doing art shows around the area.

Maureen Bardusk’s work Unexpected Development, appears in a special exhibit from Dubuque Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Dubuque, Iowa.

June 1-30
Jac Tilton will be the featured artist at the Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City during the month of June. He’ll be at the gallery on June 5th in conjunction with the Downtown Iowa City Gallery Walk, Iowa City, Iowa.

Mary Jo Hinds will have a solo show at Artists and Artisans, 137 N. Main Street, Elizabeth, Illinois. She will be present for the reception on June 5 from 11am—2pm.

June 5-6
Stephanie O’Shaughnessy and Joy Newman, along with two other potters/sculptors will be showing and selling their artwork at Beach House Pottery, on the banks of Lake Monona, 741 Jenifer Street, Madison, Wisconsin.

Jenna Lueck along with other juried artists will be at Northern Illinois Arts and Crafts Show in Sycamore, Illinois.
Jenna will also have a solo show on June 27 at Paint and Pixels Open House, 1-5pm, 23456 Waupeton Road South, Sherrill, Iowa.

Diane Banas, Beth Bird, and Denise Pozen, along with three other artists will be featured in an art show called “Amazing Art and Wine,” 1-5pm, Galena Territory Association Social Hall, Galena, Illinois.

June 25-26
Dave Eischeid will be included in the Spring Art Exhibit at the Button Factory, 301 South Riverview, in Bellevue, Iowa. The reception is Friday 5-8pm and then also open on Saturday, 2-5pm.

June 26-October 30
Katie Schutte and Wendi Dibbern, along with 25 other artists will be featured in the juried show, Dubuque Museum of Art Biennial, Dubuque, Iowa.

June 27
Brian McCormick will be showing his work on his front porch at 407 N. Brearly Street, 1-5pm in Madison, Wisconsin's Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood’s Annual Art Walk. Get maps for the self-guided tour at 408 Washburn Place, Madison (#1 on map).
