Mathangi Subramanian is an award winning writer, author, and educator. A former public school teacher, senior policy analyst for the New York City Council, and assistant vice president at Sesame Workshop, her work has appeared in The Washington Post.com, Al Jazeera America, Quartz, The Hindu, The Wire, The Indian Express, Skipping Stones, Thinkling, and the Seal Press anthology Click! When We Knew We Were Feminists, among others. During the evening's event, she will share excerpts of her debut adult fiction book, A People's History of Heaven, with a Q&A session following the reading.

Placemaking & Truth Telling: a Writing Workshop with Mathangi Subramanian

One of the most complicated questions we are asked is, "Where are you from?" As the idea of borders grows at best obsolete, and, at worst, violent, and as our families expand to include more than our biological relatives, our feelings about where we belong shift and change. In this workshop, we will explore the idea of home through a series of poetic exercises designed to help students understand the people, places, and beliefs that constitute our personal geographies. Students will leave with at least one list poem, as well as exercises that they can use to continue their writing practice.

Kore Press Institute is pleased to offer this dynamic, decolonize-your-practice training to help educators, community workers, and parents sharpen their intersectional gender literacy skills for creating inclusive, safe learning spaces for all to thrive!
The two-day immersion led by poet-educators Em and Teré, along with educational leader Eve Rifkin, will investigate the thicket of our socially constructed gender identities and the snare of implicit bias, especially as it occurs at the intersection of multiple other oppressions. Participants will identify areas for personal and professional growth and think how they can move into a more fully gender inclusive, equitable practice. Additionally, you will learn about student and parent rights and privacy laws along with a whole host of resources, including a reading list and current research. In collaboration with the Institute for LGBT Studies, twenty full and partial scholarships are also available upon request.

Reducing the impact of suicide on our community begins with storytelling, conversation, and sharing of outreach and counseling resources. Join us for a screening of the documentary film
Not Alone, featuring the stories of high school students who have struggled with mental illness and suicidal ideation, and how sharing their stories helped keep them alive. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Joronda Montaño, Exec. Director of notMYkid, Rezwana Islam, UA Public Health major and LGBTQ advocate, Ernestina Limon, former Pima County Health Dept. Community Mental Health and Addiction Program Coordinator, and Darin Knapp, UA Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences Assistant Professor of Practice. Before the screening, there will be resource tables with information on local mental health treatment, education, and outreach organizations on the patio
