Notes from the Advisory Council

Bookselling: Built by Collaboration
By Beth Wagner, Phoenix Books
NEIBA booksellers come from a from a wide range of stores, urban to rural, tiny to large (just look at our membership map). While our operations may differ, we share similar goals: to serve the communities in which we live and work. We have much to learn from each other.

It’s always struck me how generous booksellers are in sharing their expertise with other booksellers. Need a recommendation for a hard to find title? Ask a fellow bookseller. Looking for a new credit card processor? Can’t remove that weird stain from the carpet over by board books? There’s advice for that, too.

Our Fall Conference is a success because of this generosity. A standout moment this year was the popular coop session, From Hassle to Habit. Booksellers Suzanna Hermans ( Oblong Books ), Gabriel Moushabeck ( Booklink Booksellers ), and Emily Crowe ( An Unlikely Story ), along with sales rep Katie McGarry (HMH), presented a range of strategies for managing coop and improving our stores’ bottom lines. Booksellers left the session with actionable game plans, relevant no matter the specifics of our stores.

What kinds of education sessions would you like to see in the coming year? Let’s keep the conversations flowing: weigh in on the NEIBA Bookseller Member Forum on Facebook .   (Not a member? E-mail Ali@NEBA.org with your FB e-mail address to receive your invitation!)

In the meantime, handouts for all education sessions are available on the NEIBA website.

SIBA seeks Executive Director
The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA), a regional not-for-profit trade association, seeks an experienced and entrepreneurial-minded leader to serve as its next Executive Director.  The right candidate will be passionate about books and bookstores, have a solid familiarity with the region and the book industry, and have the strategic and administrative acumen needed to help the organization thrive in the future. Wanda Jewell, the incumbent, is retiring after a thirty-year tenure as Executive Director.

Current programs are designed to provide skills, informational resources, and tools to enhance booksellers’ success and visibility. They include the annual Discovery Show and SIBA in the Springtime – high energy networking and educational events which draw hundreds of booksellers, authors, publishers, and vendors. Special awards, social media, and marketing tools are designed to increase sales and public awareness of indie bookstores. Also, SIBA’s Peer Review Trust acts as an archive of best practices for bookstores and offers peer review assessments for stores who feel they would benefit from some outside assistance.

Priorities for SIBA’s next Executive Director are to continue strong governance practices, enhance strategic capabilities, promote organizational sustainability, build advocacy and partnerships, strengthen communication, improve programmatic and operational focus, seek opportunities to improve diversity and inclusion, and pursue ways technology can enhance SIBA’s overall efficiency and effectiveness.

Additional details about the position and qualifications sought are available online. Organizational information can be found on SIBA’s website –  www.sibaweb.com . Inquiries about the position and the search process should be addressed to:  EDjob@sibaweb.com .

SIBA is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes a diverse pool of candidates.
