DMV Extends All Expiring Driver Licenses,
Clarifies Enforcement

Members,

Today, the DMV issued a statement extending the expiration date of expiring CDLs until June 30 and all other drivers licenses for drivers under the age of 70 until May 31.

As you know, CTA has been coordinating closely with the DMV and other state transportation agencies to develop practical solutions to the issues arising from the constantly changing COVID-19 situation.

CTA staff was advised by industry stakeholders that previous enforcement discretion issued by the DMV on expiring licenses was insufficient. In consultation with advice from CTA member attorneys, the recommendation was made to extend the expiration date of licenses, rather than issuing further enforcement discretion.

The new statement from the DMV provides that, " all commercial driver licenses, endorsements, and certificates expiring between March and June 2020 are now valid through June 30, 2020 ...however, the extension does not include medical certificates for commercial drivers, which requires additional administrative actions scheduled in the near future."

The DMV has alerted California law enforcement of the extensions.

CTA will continue to work with state transportation agencies to resolve issues as they arise and to monitor ongoing, temporary programs. We will update membership of any new developments.
