Hurricane Dorian Victims in the Bahamas Show High Rate of Podiatric Pathology

Hurricane Dorian caused utter devastation, affecting the outer islands of the Bahamas in early September, leaving many residents homeless and in need of medical intervention. A team of podiatrists and other medical professionals diagnosed and treated large groups of victims of the hurricane in Nassau in October.

degree in Human Medicine. Silver Tsunami Part II -
NYCPM Program Focuses on Geriatric Patients
 On Saturday October 5, noted and distinguished lecturer Allen Jacobs, DPM, presented a full-day program, The Silver Tsunami Part II, devoted entirely to diagnosis and management of lower-extremity manifestations of disease commonly seen in the geriatric patient, to an overflow crowd of practitioners and residents.
In his well-referenced and practical talk, Dr. Jacobs stressed how podiatric physicians are best suited to recognize and treat lower-extremity conditions in this growing population and improve overall quality of life and, in some cases, longevity. Dr. Jacobs, of St. Louis, MO, is a nationally recognized author, researcher, speaker and podiatric physician. This year's program built upon and expanded topics initially presented at last year's The Silver Tsunami Part I to a likewise sold-out house.

Library Receives Two Grants
The Sidney Druskin Memorial Library recently received a $4,745 Coordinated Collection Development Aid grant from the Division of Library Development, New York State Library, New York State Education Department. Paul Tremblay, MLIS, MA, Chief Medical Librarian, indicates the library will use the grant for e-resources and books.
The library has also received a $20,000 grant from the Gladys Brooks Foundation, with which to purchase orthopedic-related and/or podiatry-related electronic books. The foundation's primary purpose is to provide for the intellectual, moral, and physical welfare of the people of this country by establishing and supporting nonprofit libraries, educational institutions, hospitals, and clinics.

Volume 27 is Published Online;
Print Version Expected
In mid-October, Volume 27 of Podiatric Medical  Review (PMR) 2018-2019 was published online. (An effort to get printed copies is underway.) Vol. 27 was edited by Sanjna Sanghvi, BS (Class of 2020), with Senior Editors Karla De La Mata, BS Mohammed Gheith, BA, (both 2020), eight peer reviewers, five faculty reviewers, and Faculty Advisor Anthony Iorio, DPM ('81), MPH. Seven research articles have been published in the volume. Readers can access PMR here.

For Gudeon, This Walk Is Personal
On Sunday, October 6
th
, Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60), walked in the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk with Team Sue's Crewsers, a team named after his late wife Sue, who succumbed to the disease in 2012 after a three-year battle.
Team Sue's Crewsers collected close to $3000 in donations for the research foundation. Seen at the Walk are Gudeon with his daughter Andrea (left) and long-time friend and advocate Anne Marie Dixon (right).

Allen L. Roth, DPM ('80) Passes Away
Allen Leslie Roth, DPM ('80), died this summer at  the age of 66. He attended Hofstra University as an undergrad and graduated from NYCPM in the Class of 1980. He was the long-time owner of Westbury Podiatry and was Director of Podiatry at Bellevue Hospital. Classmate Barbara Resseque, DPM ('80) remembers him as "the nicest guy in our class - always funny. I will miss him."

Harold D. Poster, DPM ('51) Dies
 Harold D. Poster, DPM ('51), a resident of Glens Falls, NY, passed away in September at age 93. He attended Brooklyn College as an undergrad and graduated from NYCPM in the Class of 1951. He had served in the Navy during World War II, and ultimately lived and practiced in Glens Falls. According to his obituary in the Post-Star, he also graduated from clown school, and entertained disabled children as Happy Hal.
