NOVEMBER 2019
CDBC Campership Fund Dedicated to
Garrison Hawley
Garrison Hawley spent 2 years at the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp. 2 years of laughing his way into the hearts of campers and staff alike. Garrison was a hard worker, a gentle soul, and the kind of person that left each person he came across with lasting stories and memories.

While Garrison was at camp for 2 years, he is forever a part of our CDBC Camp Family. Garrison passed away in 2013, yet his spirit is with us each summer as kids from all over the world travel to camp and we wear his initials on every camp t-shirt.

It has long been on the heart of our foundation that so much of the energy we put into camp is in honor of Garrison Hawley, however, today we would like to officially announce that the CDBC Campership Fund will continue in honor of Garrison Hawley.

So far, our supporters have raised over $14,000!  This is enough to provide Camperships for 8 campers, and we are well on our way to supporting 25 campers to mark our 25th year of the Chris Dudley basketball Camp.  100% of these funds goes towards supporting campers and families that would otherwise be financial unable to afford camp tuition. Our goal is to support 25 full camperships by the end of 2019, in loving honor of Garrison.

Favorite Camp Memory
It is so hard to pick one distinct favorite memory from camp! I remember how amazing it was to feel like I had a break from diabetes management for a week. The endocrinologists would advise basal rate changes daily and insulin doses before each meal. Every other week of the year I had to constantly make judgments about diabetes care, but at Chris Dudley Basketball Camp I had so much support in all aspects of my health.

What did you learn about diabetes at camp?   I learned the importance of nutrition in diabetes management. Diligently monitoring carbs and eating low carb meals to limit blood sugar spike. I also learned that you can achieve anything if you have diabetes, you just have to try harder!

Do you stay in contact with anyone you met while attending camp?   I stayed in contact with some fellow campers via social media.

What is your advice for present or future campers?   Being highly active with Type 1 Diabetes is a challenge, but worth the reward. To achieve what you want with diabetes requires planning, dedication and a positive attitude. Following those guidelines I played for my high school's basketball team during my time at Dudley camp. As well, this last year I hiked for multiple days in the Andes mountains to Machu Picchu where there was little to no access to medical care.

Where are you now?!   Since I last attended camp 8 years ago, I graduated from North Park University in Chicago with a BA in Biology.  A month ago I returned from living in Peru teaching English for 8 months in the city of Cusco.  I currently live in Denver and will be pursuing my master's in teaching next fall. I am also getting married next summer to my amazing and beautiful fiancĂ©, Rachel!

"Where Are They Now" is a monthly feature article showcasing past Chris Dudley Basketball Camp campers, now young adults with type 1 diabetes living active lives and following their dreams!

We want to hear from YOU! How are you thriving with diabetes?! Where has life taken you?
