Normally after the "Dog Days" of summer we start to fix our eyes on kids going back to school, thinking about the upcoming hunting season, and getting our home projects completed before the winter weather sets in. However, this year has been an anomaly with Covid and our social distancing, which has the school year up in the air, vacations on hold, and some of our projects completed since we are stuck at home.

With the "Dog Days" of summer behind us we know that Labor Day is fast approaching. We want to wish everyone a safe Labor Day holiday weekend. We will be closed on Monday September 7, 2020, Labor Day and will reopen per usual on Tuesday.

The year of 2020 has been quite the ride and it is not over yet. Now every other commercial on television is a political ad, so if you are like me, you would rather be doing something else than to listen to that gibberish. So, if you have your home projects completed and you don't want to listen to the babble on the news and the commercials, you might want to create a project for your model railroad.

To give you encouragement and an incentive to do some serious modeling, we are holding a virtual contest. Purchase a structure kit within the contest time period from our store, either online or from our physical location, build the kit either as it is designed or kitbash it and enter our virtual contest. We are simple people and want to keep the contest as simple as possible. We will have two categories; Wood structures and Plastic structures. Models will be judged by the quality of the build and by how it is detailed.

We will select a first, second and third place in each category.
First place winners will receive the amount of the kit cost plus a seventy-five-dollar EHS gift certificate.
Second place winners will receive an EHS fifty-dollar gift certificate.
Third place winners will receive an EHS twenty-five-dollar gift certificate.
Judging will be accomplished via photos provided by the contestant (Quality photos will aid us in judging models). Therefore, the more quality photos you send may help distinguish your model.
A summary of what was done and how it was done will also increase your chances.
All entries must be entered by October 30, 2020 to be eligible.
Email your photos to: [email protected] or snail mail a thumb drive to our address.
Judging will be done by the EHS staff. Of course, The EHS staff is not eligible to participate.
By entering the contest, you give EHS the permission to post the photos on our Facebook page or our website.

Besides having a chance to earn a prize, you will have a quality structure on your layout and you can remember you had something positive come out of 2020. In addition, you will also have your mind on something more positive, instead of the rubbish that is in the news.

Speaking of structures, we will be receiving the latest beautiful Hidden River Manufacturing laser cut structure tomorrow. It is a scale reproduction of the Green Bay Chicago NorthWestern Depot and former Titletown Brewery Restaurant. It is 11" by 24" with a lighted clock tower! As I mentioned in one of my past newsletters, it is a work of 3D art! The first batch is already sold out; however, we have a second batch arriving late next week. If you want more information about it or get on the list, give us a jingle or an email and we will get it to you.

We continue to be open by appointment for the foreseeable future, especially since we have one of our staff out with an injury. Once our world returns to some type of normalcy, we will reassess how we operate. So, please give us a call or an email and we will accommodate you so you can have a safe shopping experience.

As it is noted above, people are not traveling or going out, which has expanded our sales from our online website. We have been sending orders to other countries, like Japan, Germany, Australia to name a few and to virtually every state. Jim has been busy improving our site and has added a new tab called "Specials". This page will be changing constantly to move our overstock items and other items that we want to move, so the prices will be very attractive. We still offer free shipping for any order over $100, however you need to "click" that choice in the shipping area.

We have received the last of the beautiful Walthers Milwaukee Road Hiawatha passenger cars, including the appropriate Skytop observation car. We received the new Digitrax Duplex UR93 receivers and have the new rechargeable throttle battery packs for their new DT602 throttles arriving next week. We still have a few Tangent 86' boxcars, and Scaletrains Auto Max cars available. Also arriving tomorrow are the new N scale 8-40CM locomotives from Rapido in both sound and non-sound versions. We received the EL&S, GBW, and WC boxcars from Athearn and the Genesis GP38-2 locomotives, but they are going fast!

For our new customers, below are items that have been announced, which you may preorder by emailing the order or calling us. We typically do not require money down, and we will contact you when they arrive. Once you are contacted, you then have ten days to finalize the transaction, otherwise you lose the preorder price.

FYI; Why Are They Called the "Dog Days" of Summer?

The phrase is actually a reference to the fact that, during this time, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. This is why Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.

In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the Sun. On July 23rd, specifically, it is in conjunction with the Sun, and because the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the Sun's warmth, accounting for the long stretch of sultry weather. They referred to this time as diēs caniculārēs, or "dog days."

Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment of Sirius with the Sun-July 3 to Aug. 11. Source: Farmer's Almanac
