Westosha Central Report Card
Exceeds Expectations!!
|
|
Last week, the Wisconsin Department of Instruction released the
2019 School Report Card scores for school districts across the state of Wisconsin. Westosha Central received a rating of
"Exceeds Expectations"
, which is a significant increase from the previous years' scores. For the last two years, Westosha Central scored at the "Meets Expectations" level with scores of 66.9 in 2018 and 64.6 in 2017.
Many factors have contributed to our success including:
- A committed staff focused on each and every student.
- Focus on math problem solving opportunities to promote deeper thinking and application.
- Articulated curricular design and sequence.
- Continued attention to the social-emotional needs of students and families. New supports and programs to help students feel safe, welcomed, and supported.
- Productive feedback on instructional practices given to all staff.
- Test prep embedded into classroom instruction and the provision of other test prep opportunities (Method Test Prep and ZAPS).
- Increased opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular clubs, sports, and activities.
- Committed students and supportive families/community.
Reaching this level is a significant accomplishment for our students, staff, and community. A special thank you goes to our staff. Westosha Central is fortunate to have, in my opinion, one of the best group of educators in the area. Our entire staff cares about each and every child as an individual. This group of amazing adults encourages, challenges, and supports our children each and every day. To the Westosha Central staff - THANK YOU for your continued efforts.
The School Report Card measures four categories:
- Student Achievement proficiency in reading and mathematics on state assessments
- Student Growth measured by year-to-year improvements in achievement
- Closing Gaps in performance between specific student groups
- On-Track and Postsecondary Readiness is a measurement using reliable predictors of high school graduation and potential post high school success
There is much to be proud of at Westosha Central. Students are being challenged to reach new heights, not only as academic learners, but also as citizens and people. We are encouraging thinkers, collaborators, risk-takers, communicators, and positive young adults. It is exhilarating to walk into classrooms daily and see our students engaged in the learning process. Each day is an exciting day at Westosha Central, and it is my continued promise that the best is yet to come.
It is a GREAT DAY TO BE A FALCON!

Happy Holidays Westosha Central Learning Community,
It is the time of year to be thankful, grateful, and enjoy family and friends.
Wonderful things are happening around Westosha Central High School. Teachers are providing great opportunity for students, and our students perform and learn at a great level. There is much to be proud of at Central!
A few reminders as we reach the winter cold weather:
- Please make sure to leave early enough in the morning for students to be in class on time. It is important for students to be in class on time, and transportation can be an issue during the colder months.
- Please do not drop off students at the front of the school outside the gym entrance. This area is for bus drop off only.
- If we need to cancel school for weather-related reasons, we will communicate via email, IC messenger, and phone.
- After the first two weather days we will have Digital Learning Days. These days allow our students to have their learning and instruction done online. Each teacher has a procedure in their syllabus outlining the expectations for Digital Learning Days in their classes. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
Have a great end to 2019 as we move toward a fantastic 2020!

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that at an election to be held in the Central High School District of Westosha, on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, the following offices are to be elected to succeed the present incumbents listed. The term of office for school board member in Area C-Paris and Area D-Salem, is for three years beginning on Monday, April 27, 2020.
Area C - Town of Paris - 3 Year Term
Beginning April 27, 2020 and ending April 23, 2023
To Succeed Present Incumbent Dustin Beth
Area D- Village of Salem Lakes - 3 Year Term
Beginning April 27, 2020 and ending April 23, 2023

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that a Campaign Registration Statement and a Declaration of Candidacy must be filed no later than 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, in the office of the school district clerk. The first day to circulate nomination papers is December 1, 2019, and the deadline for filing nomination papers is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.
NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that if a primary is necessary, the primary will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

9th Annual Father/Daughter Dance
Friday, December 13, 2019
6-8:30 p.m.

Westosha ABS invites all princesses to enjoy a magical night at the 9th Annual Father-Daughter Dance in the Westosha Central Cafetorium on Friday, December 13, from 6 until 8:30 p.m. This fun night consists of games, crafts, photos, dancing, and raffle prizes. This year's them is "Frozen, the Movie", so wear your best Elsa costume! The cost is $20 per couple (Dad and Daughter) and $5 for each additional daughter.
We hope all princesses can attend this enchanting evening! The proceeds from the event will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Wisconsin.

Computer Science Education Week
December 9 - 15, 2019

- Cryptocurrency transactions on the Bitcoin ledger,
- Coding in music by building dynamic eight-count beats and patterns,
- Exploring how mass and speed affect collisions using JavaScripts, and
- The intersection of coding and art by creating memes.

It is the time of year to keep an eye on the weather. There will be times that the weather will affect school and other events and activities. In the event of a school closing or event cancellation, parents will receive an email and phone call from the school. In addition, the information will be broadcast on the following stations:

As the leaves fall from the trees and snow starts to fly, we turn from the fall sports season to winter. This past fall, Westosha Central witnessed a number of team and individual accomplishments. On October 21, the Boys Volleyball team played Burlington in a conference match. Earlier in the season the team lost a tight contest 2-3 at Burlington. It was an energetic and enthusiastic crowd that propelled the boys to a victory and a share of the Southern Lakes Conference Championship for the first time since 2016. After coasting to a WIAA Regional victory over Wilmot, the boys dropped an epic five set match against Franklin in the Sectional Semifinal game.
The Boys Cross Country competed in the WIAA Sectional hosted at UW-Parkside on October 26. Only a few weeks earlier the team had finished third at the Southern Lakes Conference meet, losing to champion Badger 71 to 54. However, the Falcons got their revenge at the Sectional by finishing second as a team and defeating Badger by eleven spots. Additionally, sophomore Will Allen finished second overall with a time of 16:49. By finishing second, the team qualified for the WIAA State Meet on November 2. Joining the boys team at the State Meet was senior Heaven Anderson, who qualified as an individual. Heaven finished third overall with a time of 19:42 at the Sectional. This was Heaven's third straight trip to the WIAA State Meet.
Five members of the Girls Tennis team qualified individually for the WIAA State Tournament. Sophomore Tristin Jantz competed as a singles player, while Kenna Beth, Paige Wysiatko, Emily Wermeling, and Janell Gillmore all qualified as doubles players. Having five players qualify for the State Tournament is a new school record for the tennis program.
The last WIAA sanctioned sport to hold its State Meet was Girls Swimming. Our swimmers are members of the Badger Co-Op team. This year's team continually improved as the season progressed. Earlier this year the team dropped their dual meet to Burlington 82-89. However, the team got redemption at the WIAA Sectional in Greenfield, where the team was the Sectional Champion, beating Burlington 325 to 303.5. Freshman Zoe McNeil qualified for the WIAA State Meet, which is held at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium. Zoe was a member of the 400 Freestyle Relay that finished second, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay that finished first and she finished fourth in the 100 Yard Freestyle at the Sectional Meet.
Great job to all the fall season athletes and we are looking forward to another successful winter season!

Summer school offers an excellent opportunity for students to earn credits toward high school graduation, learn in a relaxed environment, and stay connected with their friends during the summer.
The dates of this year's summer school will be June 15 through July 23, 2020. Summer school courses run Monday through Friday. Please note that for the Fourth of July holiday, summer school will not be in session July 2 through July 6. Classes will resume July 7, 2020.
Bus transportation will be provided to students enrolled for a full summer school day, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Instruction will be delivered in multiple formats including face-to-face instruction, blended learning, and computer-based Apex online learning. Full credit courses will run in one session from 7:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Half credit courses will run in two sessions. Session One is from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and Session Two is from 10:10 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.
Students who are absent for more than three days per course are subject to withdrawal from the summer school program with no refund of fees or awarding of credit for their course.

Opportunities for students are sometimes shared with the District. The opportunities are passed to our students, elementary schools, counselors, posted on our website, and shared in this newsletter as appropriate.
While we are making students and parents aware of opportunities, the District does not endorse the activities/opportunities.

One of our community members has donated food for families in need. Family requests will be completely anonymous.
