Volume 10 Number 37                                              April 3, 2020
General News
Principal's Perspective
Dear Delone Catholic Families,

I received an update from Superintendent Breen regarding the Diocesan response to Governor Wolf's order to extend the closure of school indefinitely. "'All Pennsylvania schools will remain closed until further notice,' the PDE's website reads. So, we will follow suit and keep doing what we are doing . . . . 'until further notice.' Since President Trump has said that social distancing will be in effect through April, May would likely be the soonest possible in-person return."

As such, our staff will continue to conduct distance learning with every effort to improve delivery as we go forward. Our teachers completed a technology survey over the weekend so that we can better assess their needs at this time, and we will be reviewing the data provided by students and parents to implement effective changes. Thank you for taking the time to complete the family survey that was shared in last Sunday's update.

Please note the following changes being implemented: to reduce the stress our students are undergoing at this time, final examinations for all classes will be eliminated for this year. Additionally, the Delone Catholic requirement that every student enrolled in an AP course must take the AP exam is waived for this academic year as well. It is the students' option to take their corresponding AP examinations as per the directives from the CollegeBoard. Additionally, we are working on a modification of our Works of Mercy Program to be shared as soon as it is ready.

As we move into next week, Monday, April 6, will be a teacher in-service day, Tuesday and Wednesday until noon will be days of instruction (please remember that all 3rd quarter assignments/assessments missing from March 16 through March 27 are due at noon on April 8). There will be no instruction on April 9, April 10 or April 13, so that families can have time together to reflect on the blessings of the Easter season and enjoy our holy days.

May you continue to stay healthy; may God bless you, and may our prayers be answered.

 Sincerely,

Richard La Rocca
Principal

Highlight A Squire Hero
On Friday, April 3, we want to highlight the heroes in our Squire family that are working to battle the coranvirus as they care for the sick, protect the healthy, keep us safe and supply us with supplies and food.

Send pictures or selfies of students, alumni, family members and friends that are actively involved in this all-out battle with the coronavirus, so that our Delone Catholic community may pray for them. Send pictures to Mrs. Jennifer Hart at [email protected]. Note that pictures may be posted on Delone Catholic Social Media and/or printed in the school yearbook.

And The Trivia Fun Continues...
Our teachers and staff may be working from home, but they can still have some friendly competition and fun. Tune in to Delone Catholic's Facebook Live on Sunday, April 5 at 7 p.m. to see which department of teachers emerges victorious in the Battle of the Departments: Trivia Edition. Then, stay to play our Online Team Trivia at 7:30 p.m. and battle it out with other DCHS households for bragging rights. We'll have a great time!

Spread Some Cheer and Help The Yearbook Too!
Mrs. Melissa Braden, Art Teacher, is the instructor of our Publications class, whose primary purpose is to create the school yearbook. This is an intensive, year-long effort to represent the school and the students for the 2019-20 school year. In light of the current circumstances, many of the remaining sections and pages of the yearbook will not be available to be published. But not to worry! Mrs. Braden has an idea of ways to fill up those pages!

"I want to show the myriad of ways our Delone Catholic families are coping and staying positive through this weird time of sacrifice and adjustment. I am asking parents to send photos and short descriptions of the funny, creative and selfless things that they as families are doing to pass time, stay active and help others."

Mrs. Braden is working on this project in conjunction with Mrs. Jennifer Hart, so please submit your photos, stories and/or videos to her at [email protected]. Mrs. Hart may want to post some of these on Social Media, so please be aware of this when you submit your photos/videos.

Seeking Businesses for Student Internship Opportunities
Delone Catholic High School is excited to provide innovative opportunities to engage our students in the context of real-life learning through academic internships. Through this program, students in their senior year would have the ability to work in a professional setting for one to two hours daily. Placement would be based on a student's career interests and pursued under the supervision of our internship coordinator in conjunction with an on-site mentor. In addition to exploring experiences on the job site, students will participate in monthly in-school seminars exploring career and workplace issues. All positions will be on an unpaid basis.

We are currently seeking businesses/companies that would have an interest working with our students in this program. Our plan is to begin this program the fall of 2020. If your business/company has an interest in working with us on this new adventure or if you have any questions about our program, please complete this REQUEST FORM and send it to Lori Heberling at Delone Catholic High School either via fax at 717-637-0442 or contact Mrs. Heberling via email at [email protected] .

Thank you for your consideration and interest in our internship program.

Sincerely,

Richard La Rocca
Principal

SportsLeader Virtue of the Week
One pillar of the SportsLeader program is a weekly virtue that we incorporate into our athletic practices and throughout our school community. Every week, we will share them here to encourage the students to take the virtue into their homes as well!

Our virtue theme this week is to be CARINGThe strength to be helpful especially toward the needy and suffering.  An area where we can all grow in this virtue is by how we react, treat and help those around us. No one wants to get sick or injured. It can be a real source of motivation and inspiration to have our friends support us in our time of need. Let's be a school/class/team that truly cares about one another.
From the Athletics Department
Congratulations Mr. Tim Bonitz
Congratulations are in order for our Athletic Director Mr. Tim Bonitz who successfully passed the Certified Athletic Administrators (CAA) examination.  He has now joined a select group of individuals who have obtained the CAA designation from the NIAAA.
