Celebrating Nearly 1300 Faculty
|
Nearly 1300 faculty completed the Summer Institute on Course Redesign for an Online Inclusive Polytechnic Education. The CAFE team, with support from University President Soraya M. Coley and Provost Sylvia Alva, and under the leadership of the Office of Academic Programs launched the summer institute providing three options for professional development: Quality Assurance Professional Development from the Chancellor’s Office, Micro-Credential Courses through the Association of College University Educators (ACUE), and the Remote Course Design for Fall 2020, created by our CAFE team.

Recognizing RCD Facilitators
|
CAFE would like to recognize the incredible faculty facilitators who helped to make the Summer Institute on Course Redesign for an Online Inclusive Polytechnic Education a success. 28 faculty from across the university facilitated cohorts of their faculty colleagues through the multi-week Remote Course Design experience created by CAFE, and 5 more facilitated ACUE micro-credential courses. A special shout out to all of these faculty facilitators for your dedication - you are appreciated!

It's Been a Busy 5 Months for CAFE!
|
CAFE has been extremely busy helping faculty since we went remote. Some of the projects that we have been working on include the launch of the Teaching Continuity Website, support for roughly 5000 courses moving from in-person to remote within days, virtual Studio 6 operations, creating a Remote Course Design experience, facilitating professional development for nearly 1300 faculty, developing a Bb Self-Mastery Online workshop, redesigning the QM Template, and merging the Faculty Center and eLearning into the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFE) with rebranding and a new website redesign!

New look, new URL! The CAFE team is proud to reveal the brand new CAFE website to align with our merge between the Faculty Center and eLearning.

In 2019 we introduced the eLearning Accessibility CHampions. We are proud to re-introduce this project as the CHampions for Accessibility and Inclusivity (CHAI). CHAI recognizes faculty heroes who inspire others to become heroes by creating a culture of empathy towards students who benefit from inclusive, accessible, and universally designed course materials. Stay tuned for your 20/21 CHampions!

Tip #1: Use Zoom polling as an Alternative to iClickers
The built-in poling feature in Zoom allows you to create polling questions for your synchronous Zoom sessions. Additionally, you can share the results instantaneously or retrieve the results at a later time.
Tip #2: Use Blackboard Ally to Provide Documents in Multiple Formats
Blackboard Ally is more than just a checker for your documents’ accessibility. When you provide an accessible version of your document through your Blackboard course, students then have the option to download the same document in an other formats directly from your course. For example, if you provide a document in Microsoft Word, Blackboard Ally will automatically provide the document for download as a PDF, as an HTML website document, ePub, and even braille, audio, and translated to other languages as well!
Tip #3: Use Kaltura to Caption Your Videos
When you upload video for streaming through Cal Poly Pomona’s Kaltura server, your video will automatically be closed captioned using machine artificial intelligence. You can then go into your Kaltura media and edit the captions wherever the captions were not accurate. In addition to closed captions, Kaltura will also generate a transcript of your video that can be followed as the video plays. Viewers can click any word on the transcript and the video will jump to that location.
