Upcoming Event:
ME Bioscience Day 2021

ME Bioscience Day is a statewide event that aims to get middle school students excited about science and inform them of the opportunities they might have working in a science related field in their future. Traditionally, professionals volunteer to visit local middle school classrooms to talk with students about their career in science and the opportunities that are available in science based careers.

We are currently looking for volunteers within the life sciences industry that would be willing to be featured in a 4-minute long video, and take part in Zoom Q&A Sessions.
Event Recap:
BioME Summer Networking Reception

BioME Summer Networking Reception was held earlier this month at University of New England's Biddeford Campus. Attendees had the opportunity to tour three of UNE's life sciences facilities including the NIH COBRE Center Imaging and Histology Core, the PD Merrill Maker Space, and the AP Girard Marine Science Center.

Networking was held outdoors with stunning views of Biddeford Pool. We certainly enjoyed seeing members of our community in person and making new connections!

Guest post by finalist Patrick Wahlig

Patrick Wahlig, a high school student from Falmouth, won our 3rd annual BioME Student Showcase on April 28, 2021. As the winner, Patrick was able to represent Maine at the international finals of The BioGENEius Challenge during the BIO International Convention.

Patrick researches the stable isotope analysis of Maine-caught striped bass otoliths as a means of determining natal origin.

A life sciences boom

Earlier this month, MaineBiz published an article highlighting the growth of life sciences in Maine. “Though biotechnology constitutes roughly 1% of Maine’s economy, it is an industry that’s been growing,” says (Agnieszka) Carpenter, who cited 14% growth in the field between 2013 and 2018, “which represents a much higher job growth than most industries in Maine,” she says."

The article featured our industry's history, some of the great companies within the state, educational institutions, funding as well as mentioning opportunities to continue such growth. “Personally, I think Maine has the potential to be a regional continuation of the Cambridge ‘Silicon Valley of Biotech,’” says (Barbara) Lamont. “Remote work, Downeaster train and quality of life support the trend.”
