The Art of Aging Review:
A Wonderful Evening of Support
Our first ever fundraiser, The Art of Aging, was a success thanks to our amazing partners and supporters. A great time was had by all and we raised over $32,000, far exceeding our goal! The monies raised will be used to support our volunteer transportation program. We are excited to provide more rides to more older adults needing regular and reliable transportation to medical appointments and fulfilling our mission of connecting older adults to services that support healthy aging and independence. We are already planning for The Art of Aging 2020 scheduled for September 24 th. We hope to see you at next years event plus new faces and supporters as well. The event will be sure to please! We are also seeking volunteers to help us plan next years event. Please call 623-7806 to learn more.

Meet Our New Service Coordinator Michelle Sikkink

Hello, my name is Michelle Sikkink. I am very excited about my new position of Service Coordinator for Age Well Arrowhead and am looking forward to working with the team here. I am married and have two dogs at home named Hermione and Granger. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth and am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Public Health.

I have always been involved with people in some manner, whether it was working my first job in a shoe store, training multiple clients in the gym, or serving as the coordinator for the many services that are offered through Age Well. Getting to know people and learning about their lives and stories has always been my favorite aspect of being in a customer service-based position.
In my spare time, I enjoy cooking homemade meals and participating in outdoor activities with my husband and dogs such as kayaking, running, walking, hiking, and biking. I also enjoy playing and coaching volleyball throughout the year. In addition, I love to travel and explore new places and have visited 29 states.

I am very excited to get to know more of the clients and volunteers at Age Well Arrowhead!

The Age Well Arrowhead Interns
It’s that time of year again when local colleges are in full swing. This is a very exciting time for Age Well because we are huge supporters of students and host many interns from a variety of programs and colleges in the area. We have hosted many WITC Gerontology Program students, and UMD and St. Scholastica students from social work and gerontology programs.

Currently we are supporting two social work interns and two students in UMD’s Learning initiatives Needing Community Settings (LiNCS) program. In my past career in higher education for 20 years at a career college, I fully recognized the impact internships have on the “real learning” as I call it for students nearing graduation. At Age Well we fully immerse interns in our culture and provide them numerous opportunities to use their skills and talents to build and grow our organization. Recognizing it takes time and energy to provide interns meaningful experiences, we jump at the chance to support their learning and always benefit from their skills and abilities. We couldn’t be more impressed with the interns we are supporting this semester.
UMD Intern
Matt Delaini

My name is Matt Delaini, and I’m interning with Age Well Arrowhead through the Master of Social Work program at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Age Well is a fascinating agency to intern with because it exists at the forefront of a major demographic shift in America that’s going to be affecting the country for decades to come. Adults over the age of 65 are predicted to outnumber the number of 18-year-olds by 2035, and the work that Age Well is doing to support this growing population is building a template that will be essential to successfully adapting at both the individual and societal levels.

A transplanted New Englander, I enjoy exploring Minnesota and the Duluth area with my three sons Han, Yul, and Sol. If I’m not out hiking and exploring with my sons, I’m teaching at ESLi-UMD where I focus on linguistic and academic skills with international students, taking classes in the UMD-MSW program, or interning at Age Well. Working with Age Well has been a great means of exploring Duluth as a community and I’m thankful to the entire staff for making it a fulfilling experience.
UMD Intern
Brooke Oelfke-Hagen

My name is Brooke Oelfke-Hagen, and I am so excited to be interning at Age Well Arrowhead this school year! I am currently a senior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and I am working towards my Bachelors of Social Work degree. I will be graduating in May of 2020. I have always deeply valued my relationships with the elderly that have been a part of my life. In high school I worked at an assisted living and learned a tremendous amount about life when you are no longer independent. When I was given the opportunity to intern with an agency that works tirelessly to keep adults independent, I was immediately excited for the learning experiences I would receive.

A little more about me, I grew up in Buffalo, Minnesota and moved to Duluth a little over 3 years ago when I started college. I have a large family and have 5 brothers and 5 sisters that are all over the country! When I’m not studying or working, I enjoy spending time with friends and exploring Duluth. Whether it be out visiting breweries or going on hikes, I’ve done it all. I’m excited to see what my last few months in Duluth has to offer me!
Congratulations to the Fond Du Lac Human Services and Dental Clinic for completing Dementia Friendly at Work Training.

Age Well Arrowhead connects older adults and caregivers to services that support healthy aging and independence.

We are passionate about serving the older adults and caregivers of our community. For this reason, Age Well Arrowhead was founded in 2014 as a local non-profit. We are funded by a Live Well at Home grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Title III funding administered by the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging, a grant from the Minnesota Board on Aging, contributions, and service fees. These grants allow us to provide services that are easily accessible and affordable.
