A Summer of Images
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seasonal Gardener Karli lifts, divides, and re-sets a large group of Primula which were part of a historic planting and in need of rejuvenation.
Arboretum Director Merrill offers a Cool Plants Tour during Alaska Public Gardens Day.
Poop in the Garden (our first children's program of the year) also included an exploration of owl pellets (and instruction in the difference between pellets and poop!) - lots of great finds!
Many thanks to JOA Education Coordinator Michelle Warrenchuk, for a series of great children's programs, and to volunteers Larry and Janet Crist, for collecting owl pellets near their home in Idaho over the last many months so that such a large variety of specimens (great horned, barn, and screech owls) could be explored.
With oversight by Arboretum Director and Horticulturist Merrill Jensen, volunteers Michele Elfers (also CBJ P&R Deputy Director) and Bobby Lee Daniels (also a regular Arboretum visitor) offer their valuable, weekend time and energy during a volunteer work party to temporarily re-locate plant material in preparation for a renovation project.
Many thanks Michele and Bobby Lee! With your help, the project was a success!
JOA's first adult education program was made possible by the generosity of Michael Penn and Iris Korhonen Penn. Several participants spent 3 hours in the garden one (smoky) evening learning photography techniques, and benefiting from the expertise shared by award-winning photographers Michael and Iris. A thousand thanks, Michael and Iris - we're looking forward to the next workshop!
The new information panel at the Visitor Entry Trail is almost complete!
CBJ P&R staff Ben Patterson, Dylan Carleton, and Merrill Jensen worked tirelessly to complete installation of the stone work and cap. All stones were collected from the surrounding area. Next up: yellow cedar panel installation and new signage. Welcome to the new JOA entry!
Editor's Note...did you observe the lack of rain gear in all these photos? As of tonight's TWIGS distribution, watering days at the Arboretum, in a rainforest, total 43 days since mid-May. Yikes!
