FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
It’s filling up!

Our “Accepted” Wall is getting more and more filled in with the names of all of the various post-high school programs and colleges that have said yes to a Tiger.

It’s a fun tradition here – as seniors learn of the results of applications they have submitted, they let Mrs. Meyer know, and she then lists the branch of service, the college name, the apprenticeship program, etc., and the name of the proud senior, on a massive banner that sits in our front hall.

It’s really fun to watch underclassmen sit and look at the banner and comment on it –

“Oh! She’s going into the Navy – that’s so cool!”

“Wow. Jeremy got into UW and WSU and Central. I wonder where he’ll choose?”

“Look at how many kids got into schools in Arizona. That’s where I want to go.”

“I didn’t know there was an automotive program like that one. That could be awesome.”

(I did read one time about a really competitive high school wherein a number of students each year applied to colleges with notoriously low acceptance rates – Stanford, Yale, etc. The school counselor wanted students to look at rejection as less devastating/stigmatizing, so he created a “Their Loss” wall. Students could proudly march up and tack their rejection letters right onto the board. He said that students could then see how common rejection was and how survivable it was as well. I’ve always thought that was such a good idea. Maybe some year…)

What makes this year even more exciting than last year in this regard is that colleges are actually planning for in-person instruction in the fall.

Last year, students were receiving acceptance letters, followed shortly thereafter with notifications about how the school planned to manage Covid-created chaos.

Some schools went fully remote. Some limited on-campus quarters to 25%. Some offered rotational housing so that students could hybridize the year with a blend of in-person and virtual coursework.

It was so tough to advise families on which option would best fit their child.

It’s rewarding as heck to see kids this spring making actual plans to attend actual programs and meet actual instructors and new peers in face-to-face environments.

We can’t wait to see how they fare!
