Well...

Times are strange, folks, and scary, but we are all in it together.  As you may know, the Governor of Vermont has issued a Stay Home, Stay Safe executive order for the entire state for the next few weeks.  It's a challenge, but we are all doing our part to flatten the curve.  While tourism is not encouraged right now, there are lots of ways you can support our businesses, whether you live here or elsewhere.  Visit www.burkevermont.com to find listings for all of our member businesses.   Here are some ways you can help them during this time:

  • Order out - CLICK HERE for a list of Burke Area restaurants open for take out with curbside pick-up or delivery.
  • Purchase gift cards to local shops, lodging, restaurants, etc.
(only 267 shopping days til Christmas!)
  • Start planning home projects and booking contractors for summer.
  • Auto shops are open - book an appointment - it's time to take off those winter tires!
  • Order products online.  If your favorite store doesn't have a way to order online, just call.
  • It's sugaring season and syrup's on tap. Definitely make it a point to order some from one of our local producers.
  • Local farms are also getting ready for the growing season.  SIgn up for a CSA share now with your favorite farmer.
  • Look for businesses on facebook, like their pages, share a post, leave a kind comment or review.
  • Register now and purchase tickets for a summer event, workshop, camp or class.
  • Start planning a summer vacation to Burke.  If you don't want to commit to specific dates, just contact your lodging of choice and ask about purchasing a gift certificate to use later.
  • THINK SUMMER...YES!  Let's all do that and hope for this crisis to be in our rear view mirrors soon.
Rural life has its challenges, but we  are so fortunate to be in a place where communities are tigh t knit even when neighbors live acres apart.  We'll get through this as will all communities across the globe.  We'll do it in our own resilient, roll up our flannel shirt sleeves, Vermonty kind of way.   We'll do it with your help.  And, yes, summer is coming.  Snow is melting and trails are getting less crunchy and more muddy.  Soon, it will be time for hiking and biking and swimming and all that good stuff.

Stay safe & healthy, folks.  We'll see you this summer.

Summer Events

Fun events coming up this summer include....

Rasputitsa  - it's been postponed until July 25th so this year's riders will get a break from the usual traverse through mud, snow and ice.  Maybe Mother Nature will come through with some drenching rain or thunder so they don't have it too easy on their  70-100KM summer ride.

Here's to 50 years at Burke Mountain Academy!  A celebration of BMA's 50th Anniversary is planned.  Stay tuned for the actual date of the event, but all will be invited to tour the school, hike the grounds, meet the staff, enjoy the samplings from food trucks and more.

The Strawberry Festival is back!  The Burke Chamber will be hosting this traditional summer event on June 26th in.....WEST BURKE!  Woohoo!  Stay tuned for details.

Lyndonville will be hosting the Annual Stars & Stripes Festival and Parade on July 18th.  It's always a fun day with lots of vendors, food, music and more.

The  Vermont Children's Theater has three shows planned starting in mid July and starring actors ages 7-17.   Shows this summer include Big Fish and Matilda the Musical, Jr.

The  Levitt Amp St. Johnsbury Concert Series is back with free, family & dog friendly concerts on Sunday afternoons this summer!   Always a rockin' good time!

The  Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour also comes to St. J from June 30th - July 1st.

Burke Mountain is hosting the  Enduro World Series  August 1st & 2nd.  It's the first time the EWS has been held on the East Coast so it's a big deal!   In addition to the races, there will be lots of vendors on the mountain, music, food and more!

And, of course, you can't miss the Fair!  The  Caledonia County Fair is August 26th - 30th!
Deal(s) of the Month

Lots of businesses are finding innovative ways to offer services including free online fitness videos shared by local trainers at XIP Training Systems, Kilos Performance and Fitness, and Cross Cycle Fitness.   Sweetwater Studios   is also offering virtual yoga classes.

Of course, mental health is just as important.  Firefly Farm started the NEK Virtual Mindfulness Meditation Group for online group and guided meditation sessions followed by discussions.

And, it's a great time to get your dog trained, too!  Yes, you can even attend online doggy school with our local dog whisperer, Jeff Scarpino of Off the Beaten Trail.
Good News from Burke & Beyond

As one would expect, Vermontahs are not just sitting idly by, but instead are finding all sorts of ways to safely help out their neighbors.  Local folks have even taken to their sewing machines to make masks for hospitals.  Local designer, Tara Lynn Scheidet, also started making hospital gowns and Catamount Arts is using their space as a home base for people to make medical attire.

Schools in the area are closed with all learning being done online, but teachers and staff are keeping plenty busy making sure kids are still getting healthy meals.  They are out and about, safely delivering lunches to doorsteps.   Lyndon Institute  is not letting empty dorm space go to waste, either.  They are using that space to house homeless families.

Kingdom Trails has donated $25,000 to local non-profits to, "support the community that supports us."  Donations have been made to local hospitals, senior meal sites and other organizations.  The  Giving Together initiative encourages others to do likewise and donate to community organizations providing vital services that are needed more than ever in times of crisis.

One thing we can all be thankful for at this time is the ability technology gives us to stay connected while being apart.  Businesses in the area quickly adapted to new ways of operating and keeping customers informed via social media.  Hats off especially to our local grocers at The White Market for up to date and very honest posts about items in stock or awaiting delivery, even when it meant asking us to wait a couple of days to shop until delivery trucks returned to replenish products.

And, of course, you need to have some humor when the out of control happens.  Libbey's Meat Market gave real estate attorney, Jill Mathers a good laugh by providing a roll of TP with her order.

Spring cleaning and renovating is in high gear these days.   StoneCrest Properties   is excited to soon welcome you to a newly renovated office in Lyndonville.  They've  created a more co-working type space and are just about ready to pick out furniture.  A big reveal is planned when the time is right.

One Burke task forces for Village Revitalization and Trails & Transportation needs have both been hard at work on projects to benefit the community.  This includes infrastructure needs such as  better water quality and looking at creating multi-use trails to better connect East & West Burke. Check out One Burke on facebook for updates and stay tuned for some great news about  the Downtown Development Initiative  which is focused on economic growth for West Burke..

And life goes on at the farm...Sam & Weeza of Sanderson's Wooden Bowls shared this photo of the lovely lady Juliet and her triplets, born on March 28th. Another set of triplets was born the next day and the farm is now up to 13 babies!  Welcome to all those kids!   Once life returns to normal, be sure to pay a visit to the farm and studio.
