Or Shalom At Home
It's week 20 of our online photo feature, Or Shalom At Home. Each week the newsletter features a photo of one member/member household sheltering in place or venturing outside. Eventually we will create an album on the Or Shalom website documenting how our community rode out the pandemic.

We invite you to submit a photo (and optional caption) to Lillian. Photos can be posed, candid, jokey, somber. Please identify everyone (use first names only if you like). By sending in a photo, you consent to have the photo, your names, and any message you have written displayed in the newsletter and on the public website.

The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (known as the "Days of Awe") are a time for reflection, teshuvah, and looking ahead. Please take advantage of these offerings for mind, body, and spirit.
Ongoing: The Fast I Desire
As part of our collective teshuvah, we offer many action items to do between now and Yom Kippur, including some important Democracy-related actions that were omitted from our last email. We'll take time to reflect together about our experiences during our Yom Kippur service. Tuesday, 9/22, 7:00 PM: Prop 15 Presentation Or Shalom has endorsed Proposition 15, the Schools and Communities First initiative. Prop 15 will close the giant loophole in Prop 13 that has allowed large corporations to shirk their share of property taxes for 40 years. It will bring $11-$12 billion a year to schools and other public services with absolutely no change in residential property taxes. Learn more by joining Or Shalom on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:00 PM for a presentation with one of the leaders of the Prop 15 campaign. Invite your friends! Register here to receive a Zoom invitation.
Thursday, 9/24,10:00 AM: Healing Service
Give yourself an hour of song, prayer, sharing and meditation devoted to healing of body, mind, and spirit for our loved ones, ourselves, and our planet. Please register here.
Thursday, 9/24, 7:00 PM: Considering God Salon
How can we cope and thrive in these challenging times? How can we move from feeling overwhelmed to sensing opportunity? Join us as we explore non-theistic perspectives on yirah, the Hebrew word for both awe and fear, through community-led discussion, poetry, and music. Open to all. Please register here. Friday, 9/25, 7:00 PM: Shabbat Blessings with Rabbi Katie
We welcome the Shabbat with candles, wine, and challah. See below for links
Saturday, 9/26, 10:00 AM: Embodied Spiritual Practice Move the prayers and soul searching of this season through your body with Rabbi Katie and OS member Gail Gurewitz.
Saturday, 9/26, 8:00 PM: Virtual Bonfire of Reflection!™
Or Shalom is partnering with Yeashore, Chabad of the East Bay, and Reboot for an evening of reflection around the virtual bonfire, with songs, stories, and teachings. In past years, when there was a real bonfire, guests were invited to bring something to burn as a way of letting go. This year, please have some paper, a pen with water-soluble ink, and a bowl of salt water. Together we will melt away those things we no longer want to hold onto. To get the link, RSVP to [email protected].

Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur Ba'bayit Kit for Families
Since our New Year's festivities are going to be primarily at home ( ba'bayit) this year, we offer a step-by-step guide to help your family celebrate. You will find blessings, activities, videos, links, recipes, and a glossary of High Holy Day vocabulary. You will also learn how to join Havaya, Reconstructing Judaism's camping and arts program, for a number of fun arts projects, storytelling, and other online group activities. Find it all here.

Zoom Tips for High Holy Day Services
All High Holy Day services will be held via Zoom Meeting format where you and all participants are visible. We chose this method so you can visibly connect with Or Shalomers. We hope you enjoy it!
- If you are new to Zoom or have not updated it in a while, please download the most current version prior to services.
- Please enter services with your full first and last name. You can rename yourself by hovering your mouse over your name in the "Participants" list on the right side of the Zoom window. Click on "Rename".
- If you are the only person using your screen, consider using headphones for a more intimate feel.
- We encourage you to keep your video camera on. When on, you are visible to all attendees. If you need a moment of privacy, please turn your video camera off.
- Please remain muted.
- The chat function will be on selectively during services. Please refrain from unnecessary chat.
- Your view will be managed by the Zoom host. However, you can override this by switching to Gallery View.
- If you need help, please email [email protected] right away. Lillian will be standing by to assist.

A new year of Bet Sefer starts in mid-October and enrollment is now open. Zehava has devised some clever and creative ways to engage our students this year with two different, complementary tracks. Wednesdays (4:00-5:30) offer two 45-minute periods of grade-level core curriculum. Thursdays (3:00-4:30) feature hands-on activities followed by a half-hour of Hebrew. Once you enroll your child in either class, she or he has access to all programming on both days.
Not yet an Or Shalom member? Use this link to try Bet Sefer this year.
