Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,
Christina and I recently had a stranger stay at our home. We were a bit reluctant, given our young children, but circumstances dictated we set reservations aside. My spiritual advisors insist that God has a sense of humor. They are proven right. This person we worried would be a burden turned out to be a great gift to our family. She was thoughtful and caring. She brought joy to our home. Another spiritual advisor is proven right:
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it
(Hebrews 13:2).
Friends, let us not neglect to show hospitality this coming week as this church house of ours becomes a home for several men who have none. In our long tradition of providing Winter Relief, there have been many times we have entertained angels. I have heard some of the stories. The New Testament word for angels literally means
messenger
. Angels bear God's word for us. I believe that the men who will find rest at Ark and Dove have a divine message for us. What will we hear?
The writer of Hebrews reminds his readers not to neglect to show hospitality because they knew that hospitality is hard. It requires sacrifice and patience. As I was reluctant to open my home, we all can be so reluctant. There are many things that need to be done to make Ark and Dove a home this coming week. I am so thankful for those who have committed to take on the task. Let us not neglect a thing. We still need:
- people to help set up and reset furniture in the church this coming Sunday and Tuesday the 22nd
- drivers to pick up, drop off, and bring our guests to showers (contact Paul Doughty at padough@verizon.net for AM transport, Cliff Wellington at 240-278-3810 for PM driving, and Brian Boudreau at boudreaubrian@hotmail.com for showers)
- hosts willing to stay overnight (contact Deb Saylor at saylordeb@yahoo.com or Ylonda Fauntleroy at yfauntleroy@gmail.com)
- evening hosts to care for our guests throughout the week (contact Cheryl Walcutt at walcutt_family@hotmail.com)

Children's Choir! New time!

Children's Choir (K-Grade 5) will meet from 12:15-12:45 (after the second service) on Sundays, beginning October 20. We'll be combining both groups, until Christmas.

Winter Relief Is Here! Beginning this Monday, October 14!
|
And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8.
Do you feel invisible? Do people treat you like you are not worth their time? Have you had no bed to sleep in? No roof over your head? No clean clothes on your back? Unable to take a bath or shower? No food to eat for days? Most of us cannot say yes to these questions. Winter Relief was started in 1992 to give people who have lost everything, and who are living without food or shelter, a place to get: warm, a home cooked meal, a bed to sleep in, showers, and, just as crucially, someone to talk to. Last year we were told that about 30 people that were helped through winter relief have been housed. Next week we will be welcoming 25 men to our church. This will be their home, and we need you to show them God’s love.

The Ark and Dove Anti-Racism and Social Justice team invites you to join us at four important forums to view and discuss the Netflix four-part series
When They See Us.” The program is difficult to watch, but it is necessary viewing in the work that we do toward dismantling racism in our communities. “When They See Us” is the true story of five fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen-year-old black and brown boys who were wrongfully charged and convicted of attacking and raping a white woman in Central Park in New York City in 1989. We encourage adults to join us as we come to terms with the ways in which black and brown youth must move through their lives, aware at all times of the reality of not knowing who can be trusted and how the very system that they have been told was designed to serve and protect them does not always do so. You will be moved to action by this experience.

Sunday, October 20, at 12:30, Stephen Price-Gibson will introduce six of the world's religions through the use of popular film clips and stimulating discussion. We will focus on one concept, for each religion, that will help give insight into that belief system, The first class will focus on Confucianism and its core concept "Li." Subsequent Sundays will delve into Taoism, then Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and Islam in a similar manner. Bring a bagged lunch! Questions?
