"My journey started 8 years ago when my kidneys started to fail. I was ready to finally schedule my transplant late in February 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic my surgery was postponed to an undetermined date. While waiting for a potential date I needed to start dialysis, and just a week after I started dialysis I contracted COVID-19. After I had fully recovered, I received a call to schedule my transplant. My friend and donor Kathy is a nurse and reassured me that we would be in good hands at Weill Cornell/NYP. My kidney transplant took place on July 2nd. I was tested for COVID several times before my transplant and again on the day on my discharge. During my transplant experience I always felt safe and everyone I met, valet staff, cleaning, security, nurses, and doctors made me feel like I was special. With masks, gloves, and extra safety precautions my care was personalized and professional.
Extra precautions were taken by all the staff to make sure I was safe and felt secure. I live about an hour and a half north of NYC and at first I had some fear of going to New York City during the pandemic.
