Professor Chuck Marsh’s manuscript “Peter Kropotkin’s ‘Double Tendency’ and the Paradigm Debate in Modern Public Relations” has been accepted for publication in Life, Freedom and Ethics: Kropotkin in the 21st Century, a book commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of ethics theorist Peter Kropotkin. 

Doctoral student Pan Liu was invited as a guest speaker for broadcast writing in the era of media convergence at the University of Management and Technology, in Lahore, Pakistan, by Azhar Iqbal, professor of journalism and media communication. The talk took place on Friday, April 23, and more than 70 people joined the session via Zoom. Liu wishes to thank doctoral student Muhammad Ittefaq for his arrangement and support in preparing the lecture.

Nominations due Friday for Bengtson mentoring award
We are now taking nominations for the Tim Bengtson Mentor Award, which is given to a faculty member who goes above and beyond the classroom by lending a helping hand to inspire students to reach their full potential. The winner will receive a $5,000 monetary award, her or his name on a plaque, and a memento. Please send nomination materials to Frances Lyons by 5 p.m. April 30. Learn more here.

Doctoral candidate sworn in as attorney and counselor at law
Ph.D. candidate Harrison Rosenthal was admitted as an attorney and counselor at law in the state of Kansas. In a private swearing-in ceremony, Supreme Court Justice Eric S. Rosen administered Rosenthal’s oath of admission on Friday, April 23. The two serve together on the Kansas Supreme Court’s Task Force for Lawyer Well-Being. 
First-year student Emme Tucker is presenting her yearlong research project, “Lost and Found: News Coverage of Discovering Lost Relatives with DNA Ancestry Tests,” virtually as part of KU’s 24thAnnual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Tucker was mentored in the project by Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski and doctoral student John Watson through the Emerging Scholars program. 

Nicole Asbury and Lucy Peterson won first place in the breaking news category of the Midwest Society of Professional Journalists' Mark of Excellence Contest. The Kansan won for an exclusive story, written on deadline, about the fraternity kicked off campus late last year for a culture of hazing, illegal drug use and other bad behavior.

The University Daily Kansan was named a finalist in the American Collegiate Press/Pacemaker competition, for kansan.com. The Kansan also placed fourth nationally in the Newspaper Front Page Design of the Year award. The competition is one of the nation's top college media contests.

The Women Philanthropists for KU is sponsoring a virtual event featuring The Agency, a J-School student organization that allows KU students to create real-world advertising and public relations campaigns for a variety of clients. The event is open to anyone. Please register here.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Foundation (KABF) offers up to $16,000 annually in collegiate scholarships. Applicants must be a resident of Kansas and attend a Kansas two- or four-year college in a broadcast or related curriculum. Deadline to apply is May 1. Learn more here.

DART to host informational session on April 28
Direct Action and Research Training Center will host an online informational session at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, to discuss careers in community organizing. All KU students and alumni are welcome, especially those graduating before January 2022. RSVP here.

Learn to keep a baseball scorebook from Professor Emeritus Max Utsler
Join Professor Emeritus Max Utsler, an official scorer for Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals, and Paul Dickson, author of “The Joy of Keeping Score,” for “Know the Score,” a family-friendly look at the basics of keeping a baseball scorebook. The free event, sponsored by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City and the Science of Sport, will be broadcast live on the NLBM Facebook page and YouTube Channel at 11 a.m. May 1.
TEDxKU: Momentum on May 2
TEDxKU: Momentum is a virtual event that embraces the idea of carrying forth the momentum of change that fueled 2020 and spotlights perspectives that inspire change and people who are a part of ongoing movements. Gain insight on a variety of topics such as human interest journalism, white supremacy in Greek life, organizational obliviousness, digital literacy needs for incarcerated women and thoughts on community based research, and more.
