Pauktuutit Blasts Ottawa for Lack of Inuit Rep on MMIWG Inquiry. The national organization representing Inuit women, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, says it's concerned and "saddened" by the apparent lack of an Inuk commissioner within the upcoming federal inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. The federal government has not formally announced who will serve as inquiry commissioners. But according to a report, based on leaked information, published July 21 in the Globe and Mail, the five-person commission will include Qajaq Robinson, an Igloolik-raised, Ottawa-based lawyer, who is not Inuk, but who speaks Inuktitut fluently.

 Salmon Sharks Contribute to Chinook Decline. Is the warm belly of the salmon shark the answer to the decline of the king salmon in western Alaska? Fisheries biologist Andy Seitz likes to think it is, based on astonishingly high temperatures transmitted from electronic tagging devices attached to the chinooks. From somewhere in the Bering Sea where the highest temperatures are around 50 degrees Fahrenheit and often close to freezing, came readings between 70 and 75 F, comfortable room temperature, but a mysterious "tropical oasis" in the famously frigid waters.

 Lavrov: Russia Invites China to Participate in Arctic Projects, Including LNG Production. Russia has invited China to participate in a number of Arctic projects, including the creation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production facilities, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, RIA Novosti reported. "China is an observer in the Arctic Council, and apart from that it is interested in cooperation and participation in practical projects undertaken by the Arctic Council member states. We would like to invite our Chinese partners, along with our partners from France, to participate in a number of interesting projects, including the creation of LNG production facilities," Mr Lavrov said during the Terra Scientia on Klyazma River National Educational Youth Forum.

Trapped Methane Gas Causes Earth's Surface to Wobble. Enormous gas bubbles trapped underground are causing areas of grass in Siberia to tremble like trampolines. Methane gas, which is twice as potent as carbon dioxide in warming the Earth's atmosphere and is usually locked beneath permafrost, is reportedly being released as warmer weather causes the soil to thaw.

Inuit Press Claim for Co-Ownership of Franklin Artifacts. Inuit are pressing Ottawa to recognize their ownership rights over the wreck and contents of HMS Erebus, even as Parks Canada prepares to assign to Britain permanent custody of key artifacts from the famous Sir John Franklin ship.
Under a 1997 deal with Britain, Canada agreed the United Kingdom owned any artifacts to be recovered from the Franklin expedition. Britain would keep objects significant to the Royal Navy, which dispatched the ships to the Arctic in 1845, then transfer ownership of the remainder to Canada. CBC News

Bridging the Future of Arctic Social Science Research, September 23-24, 2016 (Monticello, Virginia, USA).
The event is sponsored by Arctic Horizons. The event will reassemble the members of the National Steering Committee and a small but diverse selection of representatives from the five regional workshops, to total about 15 people. The aim will be to identify and synthesize the core threads of the previous workshops and public contributions proffered between workshops. The target output for the workshop will be a final report draft and outline of steps leading to the final report release in June 2016. The Jefferson Institute will manage production of the publication.
