Celebrating Motherhood and Mary's Intercessory Power
Happy Mother's Day to all mothers ―birth, spiritual or otherwise! Enjoy the day and the blessing of mothers at Mass this Sunday, and savor the blessedness of your call to motherhood. " The human family is built upon mothers. A world in which maternal tenderness is dismissed as mere sentiment may be rich materially, but poor where the future is concerned. Mother of God, teach us to see life as you do. Turn your gaze upon us, upon our misery, our poverty. Turn to us thine eyes of mercy. ... God himself needed a Mother: how much more so do we! Jesus himself gave her to us, from the cross: 'Behold your mother!” (Jn 19:27).'" (Pope Francis, January 1, 2019)
On this Mother's Day weekend, let's remember Pope Francis' invitation: "In this month of May, led by the shrines scattered throughout the world, we are reciting the Rosary to pray for the end of the pandemic and for the resumption of social activity and work." Use this Vatican guide containing links to the daily livestream of the rosary, the liturgical guide to this May 2021 prayer, and links to how to pray the Rosary. Pope Francis led the first rosary on May 1, and will lead the last one from the Vatican Gardens.

Registration Open for Angels in the Bible
This summer in June and July 2021, St. Matthew's hosts a 6-session Bible Study newly published by Little Rock Scripture Study, "Angels in the Bible." Register for either of two parishioner-led groups that will meet virtually once each week - one on Sunday afternoons, and one on Monday evenings.
Let's Get Reading!
Fr. Jack Hurley leads a Cathedral Book Club Zoom discussion of "I Came as a Shadow: An Autobiography," by John Thompson, on Thursday, June 17, from 7 to 8pm. It is the story of the recently deceased native Washingtonian whose life on and off the basketball court threw America’s unresolved struggle with racial justice into sharp relief. A Zoom link will be published the week before the meeting. All are welcome.

Msgr. Jameson, 10am Mass Homily
5th Sunday of Easter
|
|
Inspired by the quote from St. Teresa of Avila that Msgr. Jameson offered in his homily? It's from " The Way of Perfection," written by St. Teresa for and at the request of the nuns of her monastery. In describing the comfort found by St. Teresa in her union with God through prayer, Msgr. cites St. Teresa's words, " ... there is no need to go to heaven" in order to speak to God or find delight in Him. "Neither is there any need for wings to go to find Him. All one need do is go into solitude and look at Him within oneself, and not turn away from so good a Guest ...." (Ch. 28, para. 2) Let us remain in his love.
On the subject of prayer, Msgr. also notes the series of Catecheses on prayer by P ope Francis at many of his 2021 General Audiences. In an Audiences 2021 listing, you can find links to his teachings, in English and Spanish, on topics such as contemplative prayer, meditation, vocal prayer, praying with Mary, praying with the saints, and more.
