Anti-inflammatory diet
Dr. Monica Pourrat

This note contains a summary of many publications regarding the topics covered, for your benefit. I hope it helps on your journey towards healthier you.

Nutrition is an evolving science with constant new discoveries about how food interacts with health and interacts in combination. On top of that, it has to be individualized. There are many diets, but best of all are the Mediterranean and Dash diets because of their anti-inflammatory effects and because they are well-balanced. Indeed, different diets can be adapted to the principles of reducing inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a natural response to an aggression against the body. Acute inflammation is limited and protective for the body, but chronic inflammation is the baseline for many chronic diseases, from cancer to autoimmune disorders, arthritis, metabolic syndromes, Alzheimer's, etc. In time of COVID-19, control of inflammation is essential. Eat foods rich in vitamins C, D and zinc.

Reducing inflammation reduces the risk of developing chronic conditions and as well helps to reduce weight.

Therefore, eating correctly will help to improve your health and reduce the source of inflammation in your body. Below you will read the foods to avoid and afterwards the foods to add to the daily diet. One principle is, when choosing any food, avoid processed foods, additives, preservatives, artificial colorings or flavors, etc., avoid chemicals in your diet, and, finally, don’t consume oils containing trans-fats, and avoid high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). If you can afford it, prefer organic products to reduce pesticides.

Ultra-Processed Diets Cause Excess Calorie Intake and Weight Gain

People participating in a recent study eating ultra-processed foods ate more calories and gained more weight than when they ate a minimally processed diet for 2 weeks. When eating the ultra-processed diet, people ate more food, ate faster and gained more weight than when eating the minimally processed diet.

The ultra-processed diet was rich in ready-to-eat meals, frozen foods, snacks, sweetened cereals, and sodas and contained hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and emulsifiers. In the U.S., 61% of the adult diet comes from ultra-processed foods.

The minimally processed diet included fruits, vegetables, nuts, egg, dairy, and whole grains.

Tips on how to increase minimally processed foods in your diet:

1.       Look at the ingredient list on the food label; buy the food with the least amount of ingredients;
2.       Buy foods with ingredients that you understand;
3.       Add vegetables and fruits to your meals;
4.       Look for new recipes to include more minimally processed foods;
5.       Plan a healthy menu and bring a shopping list to the supermarket; and
6.       Start Cooking!

Dieta antiinflamatoria
Dra. Monica Pourrat

6. A Cocinar!
