Siamanto Academy New Term Begins

The Eastern Prelacy's Siamanto Academy resumed its regularly scheduled classes last Saturday with the participation of seven students who met at the Prelacy offices in New York. The students first became acquainted with the work and mission of the Prelacy. Because the Prelate, Archbishop Anoushavan, was traveling he connected with the students by SKYPE with warm greetings and wished them a successful year at the Academy and offered the opening prayer. Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian began by speaking about the passage of the Genocide resolution in the United States House of Representatives last week. Through the use of technology the students were taken to Armenia on the occasion of the 2, 801 anniversary of Yerevan/Erebouni and were able to explore new and old Yerevan.

The next Siamanto Academy class will convene at the Prelacy offices on Saturday, December 7. For information contact Mary Gulumian, director of the Armenian National Education Committee by email ( [email protected]) or telephone (212-689-7810).

Benefactor's Day
This Sunday is Benefactors' Day at St. Sarkis Church. On this day we pray for the souls of all those who helped to build this spiritual house and make a beacon of light for the community.

We remember especially Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian.
Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian were a unique couple of exceptional character and vision. Devoted church supporters, their generosity touched many lives and organizations as dedicated servants of the Great House of Cilicia and its Seminary, the Prelacy and the Saint Sarkis Church and School. Hovsep and Suzanne had no children of their own, but they enjoyed the company of young people and made special efforts to encourage young Armenian-Americans in their educational goals.
Mrs. Hagopian was a National Benefactor with many Armenian Institutions benefiting from her generous heart yet the center of her motherly love was the Saint Sarkis Church. Present at its inception, Mrs. Hagopian carefully helped nurture its growth and development through the years and at the time of greatest crisis of maturity of our Church, she challenged us not to dwell on past difficulties but rather to think positively about the future. She generously contributed toward the construction of the "Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian" Saturday Language School at the newly consecrated St. Sarkis Church and there was never an opportunity that she overlooked to volunteer her time, counsel and financial support in our various Church activities.

In recognition of her outstanding service to the Armenian Church, Mrs. Hagopian was made a Princess of Cilicia by His Holiness Karekin II in 1987. The Prelacy honored her as Woman of the Year in 1985, and the Hamazkain Armenian Educational and Cultural Association honored her in 1991.

Mrs. Suzanne Hagopian's deep commitment to the welfare and financial survival of St. Sarkis Church was expressed through many generous donations. However, none was more symbolic of her motherly love for St. Sarkis Church, as was her final and eternal gift. Upon her death, she bequeathed part of her estate to the Church and School thus securing its perpetual spiritual and financial welfare. Her loving memory has left an imprint in our hearts.

The Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School of St. Sarkis Church and the community at large, will observe a memorial service known as Benefactor's Day.

* Biography of Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian is provided by Dr. Louiza Kubikian

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (5.15-33)
Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church- for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery-but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (8.49-57)
While he was still speaking, someone came from the leader's house to say, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer."

When Jesus heard this, he replied, "Do not fear, Only believe, and she will be saved."

When he came to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him, except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. They were all weeping and wailing for her, but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up." Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then he directed them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astounded; but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
ARCHANGELS MICHAEL AND GABRIEL
This Saturday, November 9, the Armenian Church commemorates the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The word "angel" (hreshdag) means messenger. Archangel is a title given to an angel of high rank in the celestial hierarchy. Michael and Gabriel are the only angels given the title archangel in the Bible.

Michael (Hebrew meaning "Who is like God") is the prince of all angels and the leader of the celestial armies. He is considered to be the protector of Christians in general and soldiers in particular, and the guardian of the orthodox faith and defender against heresies.

Gabriel (Hebrew meaning "Strength of God") is one of God's chief messengers. He was God's messenger to Daniel to explain his vision (Daniel 8:16-26) and prophecy (Daniel 9:21-27). He foretold the birth of John the Baptist and was the messenger announcing the forthcoming birth of Christ (Luke 1:11-21).

"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it." (Hebrews 13:2)
