Message from the Vice Provost for Faculty Success

Greeting Mean Green Colleagues,

Welcome to the Spring 2022 semester! I hope you had a restful time during the holiday break and are coming back with renewed vigor. I welcomed 27 new faculty last week during New Faculty Orientation given our increase in graduate student enrollment across our campus. These faculty are excited to join our Mean Green community!

I know many of you are concerned about the rapid rise of the omicron variant. In a joint webinar with multiple divisions last Friday, we provided guidance on returning to campus safely, testing and reporting, and academic instruction. You can watch the webinar and find answers to your COVID-related questions on the Return to Learn website. We hope that the omicron spike will decrease as swiftly as it arrived, and I know we are all committed to proceeding in a safe manner. As I reflect on Dr. King’s solace during fearful times, “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles,” I know we will persist by taking care of each other.

We will continue to offer Faculty Success events and programs in a hybrid format to allow flexibility. This offering resonated with our faculty as we saw increased attendance in each of our programs. This spring, we welcome Dr. Donna Stokes (Professor and Associate Dean, University of Houston) who will discuss how to implement DEI practices in STEM settings. Please watch our calendar for additional programs that will be added. I am also excited that many units and colleges are sponsoring their own programs in support of their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. If your unit is considering a program, please submit an approval form.

Finally, your Faculty Success team congratulates Provost Cowley who was recently named the sole finalist to be the next president of the University of Texas at Arlington. Provost Cowley has led several transformative efforts to increase our faculty diversity, research impact and recognition, student graduation rates, and improve our Carnegie ranking! We will certainly miss her—especially her colorful costumes during our holiday seasons—and know she will soar in her new role.
Talons up!

Growth Mindset
hands holding a small plant sprouting from soil
Having the right mindset can lead to greater opportunity and success for students, faculty, and staff. Sometimes an obstacle to our success begins with how we perceive challenges — and for students, an additional barrier can be how they perceive their university’s response to failure. Our messaging can facilitate a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. With an eagle eye on building a growth mindset culture at UNT, several steps have been taken to expand our success programs, including this video from New Faculty Orientation: Student Motivation and Success: How Our Students Can Develop a Growth Mindset.

The Division of Planning offers numerous workshops on growth mindset throughout the year, and you can find additional resources on their website and in Bridge. Contact Stacey.Polk@unt.edu if you have questions or suggestions.
