Giving Tuesday 2020 is December 1. On that day, many missions and charities encourage you to give to their cause and purpose.
The Tucker First "Mission Possible" Committee has compiled a list of our Tucker First mission partners and agencies. Through your Faith Promise pledge, our church has already contributed donations of money, time, and volunteers to these groups in 2020. If on Giving Tuesday, you would like to give to an organization, we encourage you to give to the following groups that the church supports through missions. Just Bakery loves Tucker First! They have agreed to have a pop-up event on the first Tuesday of every month at Tucker First.
Online pre-orders for this pop-up event have a minimum order of $20. However, Just Bakery always provides a lot of baked goods and sweets for quick sale at the pop-up event. They also have a nice selection of gluten-free options.

The molasses cookies melt in your mouth, the sourdough loaf and the rosemary and sea salt focaccia will meet your every bread needs. And, all three products are vegan.
We love and seek out wheat flour in our house. John and Rebecca's dietary choices have nothing to do with health. John does it to protect animals and Rebecca does it to protect animals and the environment (methane, and other byproducts; she also refuses to purchase anything in single use packaging to protect the environment). So they eat all kinds of not so healthy vegan and vegetarian food.

Each Friday since September 11, Tucker First volunteers have picked up boxes of non-perishable SuperPacks, provided by Action Ministries, from our Activities Center to give out to children at Tucker Mobile Homes, the Stanford Oaks Apartments, and the Springdale Glen apartments.

Corners Outreach Receives Warm Clothes |
|
Corners Outreach staffer Jana Mock (volunteer coordinator) and KC Sorensen (program director) receive donations of jackets, hats, and gloves from our congregation (photo right). The items were given to their students in need last week during the Corners Outreach Thanksgiving Giveaway.
Our Children First Committee is still collecting donations of new jackets, hats and gloves for children through December 15. You may drop these off at the church office reception area on Mondays and Wednesdays, or contact Robin Pounds to arrange pickup at 404-918-0069. Thank you for supporting this outreach to children in need in our community.
It was a pleasure to meet you in person last week. On Saturday we gave away over 200 bags of food, warming items, and the coats you donated to families in need. Thank you so much for blessing our families this Thanksgiving season. We are thankful for our partnership with you and Tucker First UMC and look forward to continuing our work together in the new year. Happy Thanksgiving - we have so much to be thankful for! Shelter Needs Overnight Volunteers |
|
The cold weather shelter, which operates out of our Activities Center, is in need of ten women and twenty men to serve as overnight shelter volunteers when it is operating.
The mission team is following strict CDC Covid 19 guidelines to provide a safe environment while still helping those in our community. The shelter provides a warm, safe, overnight environment for the homeless as well as anyone who has had their heat turned off. It opens at 7:00 pm and admits guests until 9:00 pm. Guests are required to leave by 7:00 am.
The shelter is only open on nights when the temperatures drop below 30 degrees without precipitation or below 32 degrees with precipitation. Due to COVID and social distancing, volunteers (wearing masks) will provide a box dinner and a box breakfast to our guests. Overnight accommodations are setup for men and women. A proposed ordinance banning urban camping led to a lengthy discussion at Tucker’s City Council November 23 work session, which preceded a regular City Council meeting.

Honduras Hurricanes Update |
|
Although Tucker First was unable to send a mission team to Honduras this year, the team is staying in touch with our contacts with Honduras Outreach International (HOI) and other groups in the country.
From Pastor Gerald, “In November, Honduras endured two major Category 4 hurricanes, two weeks apart. Bridges were washed out and mudslides closed most of the main roads, making it difficult for food and medical supplies to reach those in greatest need. Wide-spread flooding also destroyed many homes. People displaced from their homes are now overcrowded in emergency shelters. The COVID-19 pandemic was already a major health problem, but the crowded emergency shelters are not able to accommodate everyone in a manner which allows safe social distancing to be practiced. It is expected that this will result in a spike in COVID cases. The flooding can also lead to a crisis in both Malaria and Dengue Fever. The hardest hit area of Honduras was in the north, which produces most of the country's food. This year's crops were all destroyed which will likely lead to food shortages in the country. Relief organizations, including Honduras Outreach International, are working diligently with government agencies to assess the situation and develop a strategic plan of response. The people of Honduras need our prayers."
From Leslie Bobadilla de Echeverria of HOI, “The recent hurricanes/storms have caused a lot of damage in Honduras. It really breaks our hearts to see all our people are going through. Fortunately, the community of El Tamarindo (this is where the 2019 Tucker First mission team worked) has not been directly affected by the hurricanes/storms. They are in a higher land area and the people who live near to the river, evacuated as a preventive measure. They were able to return to their homes soon after the storms and there was little damage to that area. We truly appreciate your love and concern for our people and your prayers in our behalf.”
This past fall, our mission committee directed additional Faith Promise funds to HOI. We will send out additional information when an appropriate plan of action from the relief agencies in Honduras has been established.
