Dear Friend of CCSD93,
Messages From
Superintendent Hill:
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. During this time of year, it’s a tradition to share a message of thanks and gratitude.
In normal years, it’s a simple message because I get to regularly visit classrooms and see the dynamic, relevant learning opportunities taking place across our District. However, COVID-19 has shaken everyone’s world and the positives that are occurring in our district can easily be overshadowed by the challenges we face.
With that in mind, I‘ve thought deeper about what I am thankful for this school year. I have realized that I have even more gratitude for our dedicated and passionate teachers, specialists, nurses and support staff who have adapted to these incredibly difficult circumstances; for our parents who have remained flexible and altered their schedules to accommodate fully remote learning; for our custodial staff for keeping buildings clean and sanitized; for our food service staff for preparing and distributing meals; for District and school administration for their leadership; and for the District Office support staff for all that they do to help the District operate. Mostly, I have gratitude for our students who have demonstrated tremendous patience, adaptability and understanding as they navigate new learning models through this pandemic.

At the end of the day, each of us are trying to do the best we can under incredibly difficult circumstances. At CCSD93, we have tried to consistently utilize current information to make decisions that provide robust learning experiences for students while contributing to the safety of our entire community. It hasn’t always gone as smoothly as we would like, but I believe we have learned a lot since the first day of school that will make us more prepared and stronger for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year and beyond.
While this school year has not been what anyone would wish for, this holiday season I am thankful for the extraordinary efforts of each member of our educational community.

Listen to Talk D93 Podcast Conversation With Former CCSD93 Superintendent Dr. Bill Shields
I recently sat down with CCSD93’s fourth full-time Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bill Shields to discuss his tenure and impact on the District as part of our ongoing 100 year celebration. His visionary leadership helped push CCSD93 to new heights by fully harnessing the power of technology as a learning tool, as CCSD93 became one of the first school districts in the country to provide a device for every student and rigorous, advanced professional development for staff in its use. Dr. Shields set the course for the district to transform learning spaces to become more dynamic, flexible, forward-looking and better aligned with modern teaching and learning. This infrastructure not only continues to benefit students during typical school years but has enabled CCSD93 to more successfully adapt to the challenges of the current pandemic.
I invite you to listen to our discussion in the latest episode of our Talk D93 podcast by clicking the video above. You can also always find it at www.ccsd93.com/TalkD93, or listen and subscribe wherever you download your podcasts.

For the health and safety of all, and to contribute to an atmosphere conducive to returning in-person learning, please continue to take to heart the generally accepted guidance of washing your hands regularly, wearing a mask, and watching your distance in all interactions in your personal lives. Please continue to consider this guidance as you plan holiday travel and gatherings.

Please review the following information for more of the latest from CCSD93.

5th Graders Show Commitment to DARE With Community Posters
5th graders at Elsie Johnson and Heritage Lakes have completed the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program virtually! Throughout the course of 10 weeks, they learned about the negative effects of drugs and alcohol and have made a commitment to remain drug and alcohol free. In lieu of a graduation ceremony, students made posters that serve visible reminders to the community of their commitment.
Carol Stream Police Department DARE Officer Pablo Castro stopped by last week to deliver the graduates their DARE shirts from a distance! Congratulations to these students, and thank you to the Carol Stream Police Department for partnering with CCSD93 on the DARE program.

Satisfaction Survey Starting 12/2
While this year is anything but normal, CCSD93 will ask parents to complete the CCSD93 Satisfaction Survey during the usual time frame between Thanksgiving and winter break. It is an opportunity for you to provide in-depth feedback on this school year and your responses will help CCSD93 improve programs, services and this year’s educational delivery. You’ll be sent a link to it on December 2. Be sure to complete it by December 16!
Students and staff members will also be asked to complete a version of the survey.

Attend Free Virtual Parent Programs 12/1
Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) is an ongoing series of completely FREE workshops and presentations geared toward helping adults navigate parenthood in modern times. They're terrific resources for our community, and even though it has Glenbard in its name, CCSD93 parents with or without students in high school absolutely are invited to attend. Mark your calendar to attend either of the two programs scheduled for December 1, and note the 6:30 p.m. program has been added since last week! For more visit www.glenbardgps.org.

Class resumes Monday, November 30. Remember, while the start and end times are the same, elementary school students will experience a shift in schedule that will provide more direct instruction, greater structure and increased opportunities for teacher support. We're excited to welcome you back virtually!
