Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the American epidemic of gun violence continues without pause. Compared with last year, there has been a massive spike in gun sales. With schools closed, higher unemployment, and fewer resources to support families, more people are in despair and seeking help from suicide hotlines. COVID-19 has trapped people in their own homes, some with abusive partners, leading to more reports of domestic violence. Gun homicide headlines in San Francisco include the tragic deaths of 6-year old Jace Young and 18-year old Jerome Mallory over July 4 weekend. Although the national data is not yet available for gun injuries and deaths, the outlook is concerning.
The San Francisco Interfaith Council (SFIC) welcomes one of the leaders from the San Francisco Chapter of Brady United Against Gun Violence, Kath Tsakalakis, who will address COVID-19's impact on gun violence prevention as the featured presenter at this week's Online Briefing for Faith Leaders. This program is hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council in collaboration with the COVID Command Center's Joint Information Center (JIC) Virtual Outreach Team.

Kath Tsakalakis is a volunteer with Brady United Against Gun Violence. Kath worked for nearly 20 years in strategy consulting, including 12 years with Bain & Company in London and San Francisco. During the 1980's, she gained 3 years of military experience in the British Army which turned out to be very relevant to becoming an American citizen. Before emigrating from the UK to the US, Kath lived and worked in 7 different countries. This included 2 years working in South Africa where she also survived an armed carjacking. Since retirement, Kath has used her strategic planning expertise to help various schools and nonprofits including Brady. She uses facts and research to frame problems and refocus teams on practical actions that will make a difference. Kath has lived in San Francisco for over 20 years. She is married and has teenage boys who regularly report that lockdown drills are pointless because school shooters know where everyone hides.
