About the Highlights
The Department of Applied Environmental Science (AES) is home to 3 degree programs: Environmental Studies B.A. (ENSTU), Environmental Science, Technology and Policy B.S. (ESTP), and Environmental Science M.S. (ENSCI). In an effort to stay connected in a virtual world, we hope to utilize this bi-semester highlights email to keep all AES students, staff, and faculty informed of current AES highlights, news, & events. Judah Young, ENSTU

Judah Young, an ENSTU student, is currently serving as the Associated Students Academic Senator for the College of Science. Graduate Student Highlight
Ryan Solymar, ENSCI

Ryan Solymar, a current graduate student in the ENSCI program, has been working alongside the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) to create 3D models of maritime heritage sites via Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry as part of his Professional Science Master's (PSM) internship.

Alumni Highlight
Natalie Vaughn, ESTP

Natalie Vaughn, a recent ESTP graduate, was awarded the 2020 SACNAS Student Presentation Award at this year's National Diversity in STEM Virtual Conference for her presentation on "Predicting the Spread of the Invasive New Zealand Mud Snail in the Carmel River". This year, the National Conference gathered over 5,000 students and professionals.

Meet the Department Chair
Hello AES Students!

I want to introduce myself as the Chair of the Department of Applied Environmental Science – the Department that houses the 300+ students in our ENSTU B.A., ESTP B.S., and ENSCI M.S. degree programs.  I am new to this position, having taken over from Dr. Suzy Worcester at the start of the Fall 2020 semester.  I am not new to CSUMB, though, and have met many of you in my years of teaching BIO340 Ecology and directing our Environmental Science graduate program.
Normally I would have opportunities to chat with you at campus events, in the science building hallways, or during office hours.  Being fully online prevents these informal meetings, but I hope we can connect in other ways, such as this newsletter or virtual office hours (email for appointment), until we are back together in person.

One of the main roles of Department Chair is to work with our faculty and staff to foster your success in our programs.  I look forward to getting to know you, learning from you, and supporting you on your academic journey at CSUMB. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, or suggestions you have for our Department.

Zoom Information Session

Program Coordinators will be walking attendees through program highlights and application requirements, in addition to answering questions.
