The Roman Catholic Church has taken him from all across the Midwest to the Holy Land. On Monday, Sub-Deacon Michael Kunitz M. Div. will add Michigan City to his spiritual passport.
Marquette Catholic High School is excited to announce Kunitz as its newest theology instructor.
"Sub-Deacon Kunitz's rigorous scholarship and devotion to his faith makes him a perfect fit as both an instructor and a role model," principal Allyson Headd said.
The Orchard Lake, Michigan native just earned his Master of Divinity this past year from Ss. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The advanced degree came five years after Kunitz received his B.A. in Theology and History from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids.
Kunitz has served numerous pastoral assignments since 2016, including stints at St. Stephen (Allen Park, Mich.), St. Elias (Munhall, Pa.), St. Gregory Nazianzus (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), St. Joseph (Brecksville, Ohio), Annunciation of the Mother of God (Homer Glen, Ill.), and Ss. Peter and Paul (Tarentum, Pa.) Byzantine Catholic Churches.
His experience in the classroom stems from his role as a teacher at Fr. Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. During his time there, Kunitz filled in for a variety of subjects.
Kunitz, an eagle scout, spent the majority of 2013 studying abroad in Rome, Italy. While in the Holy Land, he interned at Dignitatis Humanae Institute while enrolled at Thomas Moore College. He continues to serve as a Seminarian March for Life coordinator.
His other previous activities include a term as president of the Metropolitan Andre Sheptytsky Fellowship (2015-16), the AQ LIGHT Retreat Program (2012-15), and the director of religious education at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Brecksville, Ohio from 2008 until 2011.
Kunitz will teach Missions I, World Religions, Who is Jesus?, and Intro to Catholicism.
