Evergreen Costume Ladies are our Volunteers of the Week
!
Thriving communities need the performing arts, not just as a means of entertainment, but as a means of creating dialogue within the community, developing understanding, and examining the threads that bind us together as human beings. Community theater programs such as Evergreen Productions `are essential in providing quality shows that are financially accessible to almost everyone in the community and that allows anyone to participate in a production.
As a group, the Evergreen costume ladies share their unique skills with a needle and thread and their creativity by creating costumes for theatrical productions. Each production that Evergreen does requires costumes that can be anything from simple, every day, modern clothing, to elaborate Victorian dresses complete with corsets, or fanciful animal costumes. When asked for something unusual like a dress that lights up for a production, they never say, "It can't be done" but accept the challenge and never fail to disappoint. Though one of these ladies may take the lead as the designer on a production, they all support each other and are always there to assist and share in the workload. Each show's director has a specific vision for their production and the costume ladies always help to bring that vision to life and usually exceed the director's expectations and provide them with something they never thought possible on such a small budget. These ladies work for hours on-end at home and at the theater to design and sew costumes for each production. Productions can have as few as 6 costumes to as many as 50. With 7-8 productions a season, these ladies can almost always be found at a sewing machine, cutting table, or taking measurements of cast members.
It can take years to perfect the skills that these ladies lend to the organization. Anyone can put clothes on an actor, but a costume designer must understand the character, the play, and the director's vision. Not only do these ladies create beautiful works of art, but they also never shy away from creating the pieces that need to be dirty and ugly. The organization would never be able to create the types of productions that it does if they did not know they have such talented and dedicated volunteers to fulfill this position. None of the ladies ever asks for anything in return for their efforts; in fact the opposite is true. They frequently donate, not just their time, but their own supplies, patterns, and fabrics. They take costumes home and wash them on their own time and at their own expense. They are always there for the organization, not just during rehearsals of a production, but during the entire run of the show in case anything rips, needs adjustments, or an actor needs help changing costumes quickly. The ladies rarely receive any praise and are happy to stay backstage, out of the spotlight and let the actors shine in their creations.

Yard Work - November 16
Happily Ever After is looking for a group of 8-10 volunteers to help update their outdoor space at their Marion location prior to winter. Volunteers will dig around and underneath the fences, place and secure the plastic barrier, fill the holes back in, and shovel and level pea gravel. This work will help HEA secure the outdoor area for their dogs, ensuring they have a fun and safe space to play and run! 9:00 am-4:00 pm (end time is an approximation). Minimum age: 18.

We are looking for volunteers to serve as ushers, game attendants and hot chocolate servers for three shows each night of the event. Volunteers will have the opportunity to interact with patrons as well as other volunteers. Dinner is provided for all volunteers. 3:00-9:00 pm. Minimum age: 16.

Volunteers will solicit monetary and food donations at a chosen Pick 'n Save location. Volunteer at either the Lime Kiln Rd. location in Green Bay or the N. Ballard Rd. location in Appleton. Volunteer in 2-hour shifts. 4 volunteers are needed per shift. 6:00-8:00 am, 8:00-10:00 am, 10:00 am-12:00 pm, 12:00-2:00 pm, 2:00-4:00 pm, or 4:00-6:00 pm.

There are more than 100 children waiting to be matched with an adult mentor, and more than 60 of those waiting are boys. Could you be a mentor to a child in need of a caring, positive role model? Bigs come from diverse backgrounds just like Littles. They are regular people, just like you. You don’t need any special degrees or job skills. You just have to want to positively impact a young person. Role models come in all shapes and sizes, and you could be a perfect fit.

Parent Pals - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) with parents referred by Brown County Child Protective Services who have identified an interest in having an informal support in their lives. Mentors often spend time helping parents with minor children develop new skills that empower the family to live and function in a safe and healthy manner. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested though the hope would be to have volunteers engaged with their Parent Pal for a minimum of 12 months.

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
