Annual Octoberfest Party
October 18 th was the second day of a power outage on the western side of the Island. Sometime during the morning Board meeting, we got word that the Seal Cove Auto Museum would be unavailable for our Oktoberfest party. Even as the meeting continued, we began to scramble. Who to call? Who even had power? What about the food that had been prepared by Membership and Volunteers people, ready in refrigerators (some on generators) all across the Island?

By noon, an email had gone out to members that the party was relocated to the Somesville Meeting House. By mid-afternoon, the reoriented M&V Committee members were setting up tables and decorating them, laying out platters and organizing the bar. Rob Collins's band was bringing in their equipment. Some people, who lacked power at home, were cooking in the kitchen.

Over seventy Acadia Senior College members and friends filled the meeting room that evening. They enjoyed cheeses and sausage, meatballs and quiches, beer and wine. The room was too small for us, it was too crowded, the music was too loud. Nevertheless, everyone wore a smile. People greeted friends they hadn't seen since before summer. Classmates had the opportunity to chat about recently completed courses. Instructors were able to interact informally with their students.

One committee member laughed and commented, “I love seeing old people being so flexible!” The M&V committee thanks ASC members for their cooperation and good cheer. Also, we thank the Somesville Meeting House for providing us a venue at the last minute. We were sorry to miss the Halloween decorations at the Auto Museum, and we thank them for putting up a sign redirecting our party-goers. Our Cabin Fever Party is planned for February 7, and we hope there will not be a blizzard.
