GPC Responds to COVID-19

When we started putting this newsletter together just two weeks ago it was exciting to think about an early spring and so much fun just ahead with old and new friends here at Geneva Point Center. So much has changed since then, and now we are all coping as best as we can amid this global and now very personal health crisis.

Here at GPC we are already feeling the effects of COVID-19 just as the rest of the hospitality industry is. There have been cancellations for March and April events, and we expect more. We do not know any better than you do about when life will regain some sense of normalcy, but we know it will happen and GPC will be ready and happy to see you. We are doing all we can to make our place, our staff and our hospitality ready for all those we serve when that time is here.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and Staff, I want you to know that we understand and take seriously the concerns that all our guests, campers and the parents of campers, staff and volunteers have. While it is uncertain how much coronavirus will affect our summer camps and conferences, we do have communicable disease plans in place that will be revised in cooperation with public health authorities as additional COVID-19 guidance is provided. We will work closely with our local and state public health departments to maintain effective protocols for the identification and appropriate treatment of any illnesses that may occur, including COVID-19. We will continue to keep up with our health standards and take extra precautions to assure a clean, sanitary environment in our guest rooms, food service areas and meeting spaces. We will also look to our guests to do their part to make Geneva Point Center a great place to be this summer.

We remain optimistic about the summer. But, like you, we are constantly monitoring the situation and keeping in touch with all the organizations we serve. As the opening day for summer events draw near, we will be coordinating with camp and conference leaders to provide the latest information about how to make their time at GPC safe and enjoyable.

One thing that has not changed is that Geneva Point Center is a spectacularly beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors. A fact that seems all the more valuable at this time. Every day, friends and neighbors of GPC continue to walk the trails, be inspired by the lake and mountain scenery and enjoy fresh air, sunshine and exercise. If you need a break and can get to Moultonborough for a few hours, you are more than welcome to do the same.

We look forward to seeing old friends and making new friends of GPC on the trails right now and at GPC camps and conferences this summer.

Be well and wash your hands!

GPC Board Approves $120,000 Barn Restoration Plan
And $85,000 Barn Appeal

In January, the GPC Board of Directors approved a $120,000, multi-phased, multi-year project to refurbish the Barn. The work will be done on the during spring and fall months starting in May of 2020. The total project may take up to three years depending on funding.

The first part of the project will involve the removal of the garage and landscaping around the building. Subsequent phases will include repairs to the original timber frame, shed section, floor, roof, siding and electrical system. One thing many GPC Barn fans will appreciate is that the existing floor (so beloved for dancing) will not be replaced, though it may not be quite so bouncy. The Barn's roof line will be extended beyond the walls to better shed water away from the walls, and the exterior siding will be replaced while leaving the interior looking as close to "as-is" as possible.

The Board also approved an appeal to raise at least $85,000 for the project. While the Board is committed to complete the project no matter what, contributions from those who care about and use the Barn are still highly important. Every dollar raised for the project will help to get the project finished sooner.  We have already received generous gifts from GPC friends who love the Barn and you can do the same.

You too can make a special gift now to support Barn Restoration.
Findin g the Very Best Staff
Contributed by Christy Mackie, Operations Director

Geneva Point Center strives to make our guest's stay a joyful time where happy memories are made and friendships are formed. To accomplish this, hiring the right staff is a priority. Finding folks with positive attitudes, strong work ethic, and a desire to make the world a better place is one of the joys of my job. At Geneva Point Center we hire staff in a variety of ways. Skype fairs, tele-interviews, online conversations are just a few of the ways we find team members. But face to face is always my favorite!

The last two years I have been lucky enough to travel to Europe to join in the Camp Leaders Job Fairs, one of the companies we partner with to find the right candidates for GPC. Camp Leaders is an organization which helps international staff looking for a cultural exchange experience get J-1 visas, and introduces them to different camps and conference centers. This past January, Chris and I headed to Budapest, Hungary. The beauty and history of Budapest was an added bonus to attending the Camp Leaders Job Fair. The architecture is awe inspiring with the beautiful Danube river splitting the Buda and Pest sides of the city.

Job Fairs with Camp Leaders are fast and furious... like speed dating potential employees! Having experienced the pace before, armed with plenty of water and snacks, I was ready to meet candidates. Lila, our Camp Leaders representative brought in the first wide eyed student holding his packet with shaking hands, with candidates arriving every 20-30 minutes.
Twenty minutes seems like a short time to get to know someone, but the Camp Leaders organization does a great job screening the candidate ' s information, asking pertinent questions from each potential staff member. Chris and I divide and conquer! As he reads through the candidate's packet, I start my first round of questions and then we switch places. Since these students have already been prescreened and hand picked by Lila after discussions with Peter and me, it really does not take more than twenty minutes to tell if we have found a good fit. The pace and structure allowed us to be able to let each candidate know on the spot if we were hiring them. Seven hours and twenty interviews later, we hired ten wonderful folks we can 't wait for you to meet this summer. From lifeguards to kitchen, guest services to housekeeping, maintenance and more, the Budapest Hungary job fair was a win!

After the fair we were lucky enough to meet up with past staff in Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. I am always so touched by how important GPC is to so many people, even folks half way across the world. Staff from as far back as four years ago travelled hours by plane or train so we could all meet up and spend some quality time together. And we managed to get a few more staff to return this summer! I am so proud to be a part of an organization that cares so deeply about the experiences of our amazing groups and camps and also for the incredible staff that help us make your Geneva Point visit such a memorable experience every year.

Gibbes House Renovations
Contributed by Christopher Randall, Maintenance Manager

When you visit Geneva Point this summer you will see first hand that we stay busy in the off season months with making Geneva Point a better place! Most noticeably this winter were the major renovations on the Gibbes House.

Phase one, completed last winter, included renovation of four downstairs bedrooms and bath
rooms. Fresh paint, new trim and carpet make these rooms the most cozy on campus. In addition to those bedrooms, the front lakeside entrance room (now known as the Ossippee Room) and larger common room (Scandia Room) were fitted with brand new flooring and carpet, giving both rooms a fresh feel in which to relax and enjoy each other's company.

Phase two, completed this winter, featured the renovation all six second floor guest rooms, hallway  and balcony. This included freshly painted walls with new white trim to bring a light and cheerful feel to the rooms. All bathrooms were updated with new paint, trim, fixtures and flooring. New carpet was installed in every room as well as the hallways and stair treads, making the Gibbes House the premier rental house on campus for any group, getaway, or family celebration.

Phase three will be conducted this coming year and will be focused on the exterior of the Gibbes House. Projects will include proper drainage around the building, fixing siding from wear and tear, repainting and relocating the stairs for the upper deck to have an unobstructed view of Lake Winnipesaukee.

We are excited about the completed interior projects on the Gibbes House and look forward to hearing your feedback. We appreciate your support of all of our ongoing projects on the Geneva Point Center campus!
