UPCOMING HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
WORKDAY -- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Habitat for Humanity has an exciting day planned for the MLK Day observance on January 17 at the Maybrook Crossing Townhomes at 1525 Oxleymare Drive, Raleigh. They plan to start the day at 8:15am with a kickoff ceremony and reflection on the Beloved Community and will work until 3:30pm. There is no one signed up yet to work; if you would like to participate, please register through the Volunteer Hub.

CHURCHWIDE RETREAT IN APRIL IS BACK!
Though we’ve had to miss our churchwide retreat the last two years, we’re hopeful that THIS IS OUR YEAR to return to the fun and togetherness of this time away. Mark your calendars now for April 22-24 at Fort Caswell!
As in years past, we’ll enjoy small groups, worship, individual prayer time, free time, meals together, and a myriad of craft and recreation electives from which to choose! We have reserved Redwine, Yaupon, Yucca, and Riverside Cottages as well as ten rooms in the Smith Conference Center (which has ramp access as well as elevators inside). We have made reservations for up to 130 people; sleeping arrangements in the houses range from single-gender bunk rooms to private rooms with double beds to a few rooms with a double bed and bunk; sleeping arrangements in the Smith Conference Center are rooms with two double beds and cost a bit more. It will be communal living, but that’s part of the fun of getting to know each another! Youth and third through fifth graders can attend without their parents as long as we have individuals who are dedicated to help chaperone during free times and transitions.
The cost of the weekend (two nights lodging + four meals + supplies) will be:
- Housing in one of the cottages: $80/person with a family cap of $350;
- Double occupancy in the Smith Conference Center: $86/person (max of four per room);
- Single occupancy in the Smith Conference Center: $120/person;
- For those wishing to stay off-campus: $25/person to cover visitor fee plus food/supplies.
Our time together will begin after supper on Friday and will end after worship on Sunday morning. There is no charge for children two and under.
Space is limited, so please contact Lynn Lingafelt and make your payment no later than February 13 to reserve your spot and indicate your sleeping preferences. Private bedrooms will be assigned on a first-come/first-served basis. We will operate under the most current CDC and NC COVID guidelines.
When you register with Lynn, she’ll confirm total amount owed which can be paid via check to FBC (put "Churchwide Retreat" in the memo line), by following this PayPal link, or by following this Give+ link.
Since we know that not everyone will be able to attend, we will also have Sunday School and worship in our sanctuary on Sunday morning, April 24.

JANUARY MISSION PROJECT —
A NOTE FROM ANNE COOKE
We don't have to look far to be aware of all the bad news around us — TV and social media give us a full dose every day. There is good news around, but you sometimes have to dig for it. As I write this email, I'm watching a news piece on two men who rushed into a burning home and saved a woman in a wheel chair — while we may never be in that situation, there are things we can do. This month, let's BE the good news. There's a lot that we can do as individuals to turn this world around on a daily basis.
As we move about our daily activities, we have many opportunities to be kind. We really may never know how much a simple word can mean. You may take the time to chat with the checker in the grocery store and give her a word of encouragement, never knowing that she was on the brink of giving up and that small act of kindness helped her move on. A note to someone who has meant a lot to you may arrive in their hands at just the right moment. Your child or grandchild's school teacher, RA/GA leader, music leaders, our ministers and support staff, etc. have had to work overtime and be creative during the pandemic— a note or email would surely brighten their day. A meal or a bag of groceries to someone who has lost their job or is struggling in this economy would probably be welcomed. Many folks are lonely— a phone call or safe visit would make their day. I'm sure you can come up with many more things to do. There are always needs to be met in our church!
As we move forward in this new year, let's focus on the good and do what we can to make the good news outweigh the bad.

SANCTUARY CHOIR UPDATE
Due to the current Omicron wave of the pandemic, the format of the Sanctuary Choir will change for January to smaller ensembles on both Wednesday evening rehearsals and Sunday morning worship services. Schedules are currently being set up and choir members will have an opportunity to opt in or out via email. Contact Maureen Howell for questions or to sign up. Interested in joining the choir? CENTERPOINT (IN-PERSON AND ZOOM) RESUMES WITH BIBLE STUDY
We continue our three-week study, “Reading, Studying, and Being Transformed by the Bible,” led by First Baptist member and Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at the Campbell University Divinity School, Dr. Barry A Jones. Covering some of the material in his 2019 book Gaining a Heart of Wisdom, Dr. Jones is using Psalm 90 as a concrete example. This week's program will focus on the critical sense, using the resources of scholarship to become active students of the questions that reading the Bible raises. Next week will focus on the canonical and contextual sense of the Bible as scripture that addresses us and shapes us. We invite you to join us in-person or via Zoom at 6:15pm on January 12 and 19. We are privileged to have a distinguished scholar like Barry Jones in our church family.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPER
Each week, dinner will continue to be from 5-6pm, tailgating style, in the parking lot. If it rains or is too cold, your family may come inside the building and we'll all spread out between the Fellowship Hall, Lewis lobby, and 301/302. We have returned to requiring reservations for Wednesday night dinners; reserve your spot at this link to the page on the church website or by calling the church office.

GLOBAL MISSION OFFERING
The 12 days of Christmas are past. Our trees are at the curb and no lights are left twinkling on our houses. By now we’ve given and received gifts from our family and friends and we’ve celebrated at church the birth of the baby Jesus, the greatest gift of all. As children, most of us grew up hearing stories from the Bible and knowing about God’s gift of his Son to save us, but that’s not true for all children. Our faith and promise for eternal life have guided us through good times as well as hardships. But what about those who have not heard? Are we spreading the Word or are we content in our own salvation? Our CBF missionaries have heard the call and are willing to give their lives to spread God’s love wherever there’s a need. We may not all be able to serve as missionaries, but when we give to the CBF Global Mission Offering, we are supporting the work of those who can go. Our Mission Friends, GAs and RAs pray for our missionaries each week and prayers are important; but this offering will ensure that they can financially continue their work as the hands and feet of God. Please give prayerfully and generously; as of January 6, we have received $4,223 toward our goal of $20,000.

DO YOU NEED OFFERING ENVELOPES?
If you have requested them, you will find contribution envelopes for 2022 on the first floor corridor leading to the Clothing Ministry. Please help us reduce mailing expenses by picking up your envelopes by January 23 or by having someone pick them up for you. After January 23, we will mail them to you. If you would like some but haven’t gotten any in the past, contact Wayne Hager and he will go over options with you. Giving patterns have changed so much during COVID and we want to be sure we meet the expectations you have for offering envelopes.
