Happy Teacher Appreciation Week
Successes during Hybrid Learning
On April 6th, Milwaukee Academy of Science opened its doors to 600 students to return for in-person learning. Students and teachers were excited to see each other after seven months of virtual learning. About 650 students remain in the virtual learning program. “This year has been a challenge, but this transition is necessary. We have been planning for this return to in-person learning all year,” CEO Anthony McHenry says, “I am so grateful to all of our parents for their commitment to support their children during this time. We have an amazing school community.”
The administration also credits parents with stepping up to the plate to provide transportation during this time. Currently, the school does not offer transportation or after-school programs due to safety precautions. “Our scholars have done an amazing job adjusting to our new protocols—getting their temperatures taken in the morning, wearing masks, the kindergartners even walk around with ‘zombie arms’ to make sure they don’t get too close in line,” says Salvador Vazquez, Operations Manager. We are able to identify anyone with symptoms, move them to the isolation room, and take next steps as necessary to prevent health safety concerns."
Both transportation and partnerships will be included during summer school, which starts in about eight weeks. In order to make up for the learning loss this year, MAS will offer in-person summer school through the National Summer School Institute for 200 students. Partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, MAS will offer 8:00 am-5:00 pm summer programming Monday – Friday from mid-June to the end of July. “We know this summer is an essential time for our scholars to be engaged in learning. Our parents are already asking about what options we will have for kids to extend their learning,” Chris Schwab, Chief Academic Officer, says.

As the weather continues to improve, students spend more time outdoors for lessons, recess, and lunchtime. “The pandemic has been tough for our families, but as a school, I believe we have made it through the worst of this health crisis,” McHenry says, “We are in recovery mode and look forward to brighter days ahead.”
Teacher Perspective on Hybrid Learning
Elementary SPED Teacher
Mr. Omar

"Hybrid learning has been a nice change of pace compared to being fully virtual. It has been great to see the kids in person and interact with them, as well as seeing them interact with their peers."
Junior Academy Teacher
Ms. Ghee

"Originally I was a little apprehensive about hybrid learning. After the first week I began to see the benefits of having our kids make the transition back into the building. Although it not easy for any of us, we have all came together and made it happen.”
High School Teacher
Ms. Hammons

"Going into virtual learning I was anxious about how to balance all of the tech and different groups of students, but seeing kids in the building and getting to laugh and smile with them has ultimately calmed so many worries and it's worth it.”

Do you remember the impact that sports had on you growing up?
Most people agree, kids learned more about life, leadership, and teamwork through sports than most other places. This is true for our scholar athletes as well.

Did you know only 2 male high school basketball players in Milwaukee were offered D1 college scholarships last year? Both attended the Milwaukee Academy of Science. It's not because we have the only talented basketball players in the city; it's because we have a strong academic program as well. Our talented athletes are offered college scholarships because they have rigorous classes that prepared them academically to meet the GPA and ACT requirements for NCAA scholarships, etc.

Our Annual Golf Outing is the primary fundraiser for our growing athletics program... This year, over $80,000 is needed to support our scholar athletes who excel in class and on the court or field.

Support our school and our athletes by sponsoring, golfing, or donating an auction item. Don't golf? Our evening program is a separate event that you can attend to enjoy food and drink, meet athletes, and hear about the impact of sports at MAS. Tickets $50.

More about Quision Harrell...
Quision started at MAS in K4 and is graduating in a few short months.  Quision, currently, is putting all of his energy into school, work and Black Student Union. After leaving MAS during his sophomore year, Quision found himself at a high school with incredibly low academic expectations. It was then that he knew that he needed to return to MAS to not only get a great education but he also knew that he felt more love and support at MAS than any other school.  Quision returned during the 2020-2021 school year and knows he is blessed to be able graduate from the same place he started. Quision plans to go to UW-Milwaukee after his senior year. He received a grant for a real estate agent program.
6:00 am - I wake up and go to Planet Fitness for a workout.
7:45 am - After the workout, I go to Wendy’s drive-thru. I get two wedge fries, a bacon & cheese biscuit, and orange juice (to top it off!)
8:10 am -Now, I am back at home and it’s time to shower and get ready. I stared at my shoe collection, in my closet, and decided which fresh kicks to wear.
8:45 am: I might be a little late, but I log into my online Spanish class with Ms. Strove and we learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs. During Virtual, sometimes I sit in the bed and sometimes I am at the table.
10 am: I log into my Math class with Mr. Tuescher and do some algebra review.
11:05 am - Now it’s time to play 2K Video Games for a little. I get hungry so I made a burger and eat it for lunch.
11:35 am - I log onto science class with Mr. Leon, my next virtual class. We are learning about aquaculture and how to make a better life for marine animals.
12:55 pm -I go to physics class with Mr. Baylor. We talk about Newton's Law. This is my last class of the day.
2:00 pm -This is my time to hoop with my brothers in my backyard. We need to get our energy out.
3:45 pm -Because I am the president, I am now getting ready for my BSU meeting.
