Letter from the Principal
Trivium is bursting with excitement as we move toward the holidays. The choir concerts have been wonderful, and we thank Ms. Gallegos, Ms. Merchant, and Ms. Forester for their hard work with our students. Our elementary students are also enjoying the Monday assemblies where we celebrate, sing, and dance. We honor a student from each grade level with a Noble Knight Award and practice our Trivium songs. It is a great way to start the week!

Elementary teachers and parents are preparing for the holiday parties to come next week. Later this week elementary parents will be bidding on the Christmas trees the students have been working on in their classrooms. They each have a theme and are great fun. Rumor has it that the Grinch stole the ornaments from Mrs. Ditty’s tree but were magically returned in good shape. It has been a lot of fun for us all to watch the trees blossom.

PIE is hard at work getting ready for the holiday parties and planning for the rest of the school year. Please join the PIE Bloomz page for information on how to get involved and watch for future events. We accept moms, dads, grandparents and can always find a spot for a volunteer.

Our secondary students are working toward final exams next week, which is not as fun as parties and tree decorating. They will, however, be glad to finish the semester and look forward to second semester. Student Council students have been selling candy canes in the morning and packing up the nearly 10,000 cans our students collected for Metrocrest. Next up is Toys for Tots and rumor has it there will be some administrators with pie in their faces if they reach their toy goal.

Open-enrollment is also coming up for new families, so spread the word about our terrific school. The open-enrollment window begins Jan. 11 and ends Feb. 11. We will have an elementary prospective parent meeting on Jan. 13 and a secondary meeting on Jan. 20. Invite your friends and neighbors to come and hear about Trivium Academy.

We look forward to the break after closing out 2021 and continue to be grateful for our parent involvement and support from our PIE group. If you are looking for a way to be involved in our school, come to a meeting or get in touch with anyone at school or anyone in the parent group. You are always welcome here!

Secondary Exam Schedule
Below is the special secondary schedule for exam week, Dec. 13-16. 7th-11th grade students will follow a slightly different schedule next week so they can complete their semester exams in the mornings. Reviews for the next exams will take place in the afternoons.
New & Prospective Parents Meetings
Attendance Reminders
To report an absence please email a parent note or medical excuse for each absence to [email protected]. Include the student’s name, grade, and homeroom teacher.  You may attach doctor’s notes to the email or turn them in to the front office. After three parent notes, our school policy requires a medical note to excuse an absence.

Elementary (K-6th) Attendance is taken daily at 9:20am.

Secondary (7-11) Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class period. Official attendance for the day is taken at 9:30.

If your student is marked absent an auto generated email is sent to the parent if that option has been selected in the Parent Portal. These emails will always state that the absence is unexcused. The attendance office will later code the absence appropriately based on the documentation received.

As a public school, we must follow Texas Education Code (TEC) 25.092 which states that a student may not be given credit for a class unless the student is in attendance for at least 90% of the days the class is offered. That means a student may only be absent seven times in the fall semester and nine times in the spring semester to retain credit for the grade level. If your child has absences beyond those numbers, you may be asked to appear before the attendance committee. The attendance committee may give class credit to a student who is in attendance less than the number of days required because of extenuating circumstances.

We take the responsibility of educating our students seriously, and excessive absences can hinder a student’s progress and the school’s ability to provide for his/her educational needs. We do understand that children get ill, and we certainly understand when they are too sick to come to school. We appreciate your help in making sure your child is present for school at all other times.

Pressing the Pause Button

I recently read an article from fathers.com about the power of pausing WITH our children and doing something special with them. There is all the hustle and bustle with the upcoming holidays, school celebrations, family celebrations, family obligations, events, final exams, and all the stress that comes along with it.

We often don’t take the time to stop and appreciate all the gifts our children have to offer during this busy season...especially when sometimes we ourselves need a break from the fighting siblings, loud video games, the holiday shopping, and busy work season.

Let’s take a moment to press the pause button on our busy lives and do something extra special with our kids… bonus points if that quality time is one on one. By taking a moment to pause your busy life for them shows your children that they are the most important people in the world, not the last minute shopping, not on the phone, not the last minute email that really could wait until tomorrow.

Below is the article from fathers.com (content warning: religious content) and an article about the Pausing and Mindfulness from maginationpressfamily.org. Both have great ideas and links for ideas and activities.

Academic Conferences

Ms. Simpson decided to pursue another opportunity and is no longer at Trivium. Mrs. Bradley and Ms. Northcutt will complete the academic conferences in January and February for our current 8th-10th graders. Stay tuned after the Winter Break for sign-ups!
Holiday Fun!
This time of year is extra special with so many fun learning opportunities for our students. Many grades are learning about holidays around the world. 4th and 5th grades are reading the holiday classics, A Christmas Carol and Gift of the Magi, and then performing a reader's theater version of both classics. The Grinch is visiting 2nd grade each day with a special challenge for the students, and kinder is about to embark on a learning experience through the Polar Express! Thank you to our teachers for making this time of year both educational and magical.

The Showcase
Tis the season for concerts and performances! We've been so fortunate to welcome back live shows this year. Both our choir and theatre departments have wowed us with musical performances from grades 3-11. We're looking forward to the upcoming show, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, from our theatre department in February!

Soccer Tryouts!
Boys and girls soccer tryouts will be on January 6th from 3:30-4:45 for grades 6-11.
Spotlight on Science
We are so excited to welcome Ms. Stephanie Powell to our Trivium family! She will be teaching 7th and 8th grade science, as well as helping out with a couple of genius hour classes. The students have been eagerly awaiting her arrival and gave her a warm welcome with cards, small gifts, and posters. Ms. Powell kicked off her "first day of school" with a get-to-know-you activity using m&ms - a crowd pleaser! Ms. Powell comes to us with 18 years of experience teaching middle school science in CFBISD and Lewisville ISD. She also started and runs her own tutoring company and has already discovered many pre-existing connections to Trivium families from her years in education. We can't wait to see what is in store for middle school science next semester!
Staff Spotlight!
Mrs. Kim Ditty, 2nd Grade

Family:  My husband, Ted, and I have been married for 15 years. My daughter Rachel is in the 4th grade. We have two pets, a cat named Smokey and a Texas spiny lizard named Steve that lives in our atrium. My parents and brother live up in Denton and we gather every Saturday evening for dinner and fun.

Education: I attended Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas for my undergraduate work. I completed my Master’s in Education at Texas A & M Commerce.

What do you enjoy most about working at Trivium?
This is an easy one to answer because there are so many reasons, and it is only my first year at Trivium. The support that I receive here from the staff, administration, and parents is amazing. The flexibility to teach using my personal style not only allows me to be creative with activities, it also helps me to build relationships with my students. Most of all, the students who bring a smile to my face every day with their insight, humor and them just being themselves.

Tell us something interesting about yourself!
You might not know this about me, but I was in a national commercial for Sears when I was in college.

What are you reading right now?
I am currently reading the Disney Villains series and waiting on the next Wings of Fire book to be released. My daughter and I enjoy reading these together at night.

What’s your favorite family tradition?
I love our family vacations, especially when we stay in the “Blue House” at Settler’s Crossing in Fredericksburg. The three of us go during Thanksgiving break when the weather is cooler. In the summer we travel to places that are cooler such as Colorado and New Mexico.

Do you collect anything?
I am obsessed with crazy socks, just ask my family and my students. I would say ¾ of my sock drawer is full of crazy socks. When asked by students if I ever wear plain socks, I say “sure, on crazy sock day.”

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?
I would split my year between two places. I would spend my fall and winter in San Francisco, California and then my spring and summer in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
