Welcoming everyone to walk through our doors on the journey to Christ

10 I seek you with all my heart;
    do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart
    that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, Lord;
    teach me your decrees.

St. David's Episcopal Church
Rogation

Right now, it looks like the weather will be fine this Sunday for our procession and cookout. The sun will be shining, though it will be a little bit cool (bring a sweater!).

In medieval England, on the weekdays following the Sixth Sunday of Easter (and before the Feast of the Ascension), members of the parish “beat the bounds” of the parish – processed the boundaries, sometimes have the young boys actually beat the boundaries with sticks (a good way of embedding the boundaries of the parish into the collective memory). Along the way, they said prayers for temperate weather, good crops, protection from enemies and harm, as well as exorcising any demons that happened to inhabit the lands of the parish. The procession was probably a carry-over from old pagan fertility rituals, neatly baptized as Christian.

In our day and age, none of us depend directly on the fertility of our fields. We just run to Wegman’s or Aldi to buy what we need. Too much rain, or a lack of rain may affect our lawns or flower gardens, but nor our livelihoods. So, the focus of the procession has changed.

We will say prayers for commerce and industry, for the protection and stewardship of the environment, for a restoration of civic life, and above all for the ministry and mission of the church. These are the things that bind us to one another and mediate to us the grace of God, in the same way good weather and good crops did for our medieval ancestors in the faith.

To make the event truly festive, we will have a cookout and some jazz music. The diocese is now allowing us to eat together outside. What we’ve learned about his virus is that it is transmitted through aerosols, and unmasking indoors is still not the safest thing to do. But since Christianity is about a meal together, it will be a real treat to eat together again, even if we have to shiver a little in the cool weather to do it.

I hope this celebration will be a way for us to begin looking to our future. This past year and plus has paused so much of our common life, that we are being given an opportunity to start over with a clean slate. Who are we to become? What would God have us do? What gifts has God given us? All these are questions we can ask with fresh eyes to see and ears to hear.

I convened a small group last week to begin looking at the possibility of using the wonderful musical talent God has given us at this time for the benefit of the larger community. It is entirely appropriate that we will have a jazz band to play out this festival. We seem to have a unique connection and opportunity with that scene in our city at the moment. I am a firm believer that the ministry God asks of us will always match the gifts on hand, and that it will produce more energy than it consumes. This seems like a good direction for us to be looking now.

Please come and rejoice in the good things God is giving us. Bring a lawn chair and a sweater!

Vacation

I intend to take some vacation time this summer, from June 10 through June 21. I will travel to Bellingham to help my sister sort through the last of my mother’s affairs, as well as do some hiking and gardening and relaxing.

Samaritan Center

During this time of pandemic, St. David’s has continued to support the Samaritan Center. Since we haven’t been able to be together to make sandwiches, we have supported them with a monthly cash donation. They have been extremely grateful for our support, and we would like to continue it until such time as we can make sandwiches again. If you would like to help St. David’s with that effort, you can write a check and put “Samaritan Center” on the memo line, and we will use that to support our monthly donation.

Seeking A New Normal in the Way of Jesus…

What Are your Aspirations for the New Normal?

“The end of the coronavirus pandemic is on the horizon at last, but the timeline for actually getting there feels like it shifts daily…”, observes Joe Pinsker at The Atlantic.

I want to invite all readers to identify the new normal you are looking forward to in your own lives and for your loved ones. For example, Christine and I are looking forward to offering hospitality to friends in our backyard again this Summer. We are also looking for ways to enable young people whose parents are unemployed to find ways to fund schooling for college.

While many of us are eager to discover a new normal, we all need to remember that a higher percentage of our neighbors than we have seen in decades are struggling to simply survive the corona “recession”. A higher percentage of our neighbors are struggling every day to keep their families fed, housed and their children’s educational opportunities secure.

Now even though our battle with the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, a number of countries, including the United States, are successfully vaccinating a major portion of their populations...

Acts 10:44-48

While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

1 John 5:1-6

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

John 15:9-17

Jesus said to his disciples, “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.”
