Dear MAR-AMTA community,

We, the members of the MAR-AMTA Executive Board, acknowledge and apologize for the harm that we have caused and continue to cause by prioritizing the comfort of white, cis, abled, and allistic music therapists over historically marginalized music therapists, students, and stakeholders. We also recognize the harm that has been caused by the American Music Therapy Association and by music therapists during MAR meetings.

We are grateful to everyone who has shared their reactions to the recent apology statement from the AMTA Board of Directors that was released on October 6, 2021. We recognize that the lack of action in relation to statements and the use of minimizing language has caused further harm. We have reached out to the AMTA Board of Directors to request a meeting where together we can explore the harm that has been enacted. We look forward to collaborating on tangible actions that will be put into place on the national and regional levels.

Through the research of the Anti-Oppressive Accountability Ad-Hoc Committee and the gracious labor of those interviewed, we can explicitly name some forms of harm perpetuated by the MAR, and are actively working to dismantle the systems ingrained into the structures and practices of the MAR that have led to silenced voices and unsafe working and volunteer experiences. We appreciate what has been shared directly by community members and the courage it has taken for them to share with us. This report and recommended action steps will be shared in our newsletter and can be found on our website here: https://mar-amta.org/anti-oppressive-report/. A summary and audio files of this report are forthcoming. We will organize a meeting within the next few months specifically for the community to come together to discuss this report.

Additionally, the second iteration of the ad-hoc committee has been formed and charged with the following: Utilize findings of the recent comprehensive report to: 1) research anti-oppressive practice/structures; and 2) explore and gather resources as recommended by the previous Anti-Oppressive Accountability Ad-Hoc Committee. Recommendations and resources for continued anti-oppressive work will be presented to the region and board.

We recognize the importance of being accountable and responsible for the implementation of change within MAR and look forward to hearing from the community throughout this process. President's Report

Robert Miller, MS, MT-BC

Dear members of the MAR-AMTA,

It’s hard to believe that we are already in October with its changing leaves and shorter days. In our home, that means the return of the fall decorations! One of this year’s additions is the monogrammed pumpkin seen in the photograph atop of my guitar. M for Music Therapy, and M for MAR-AMTA!

Pumpkin for Presidents report.jpeg

October also means that we are gearing up for the AMTA National Conference, taking place online for the second year in a row. Though I miss being able to see everyone in person, I look forward to getting to see familiar names and faces and to attending the sessions. It means we are also looking ahead to our conference in Harrisburg in Spring of 2022. It is not too late to submit a session proposal - if you are interested in doing so, please check out this link 2022 MAR-AMTA Call for Papers (google.com). Thank you for considering a proposal!

In an in-person conference we have a General Membership meeting for the region. This year, with the conference being online, we will be holding the meeting outside of the conference window. Our MAR-AMTA General Membership meeting will be taking place on Sunday, October 24, 2021 from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. We will be sharing updates from our board and from our committee representatives and look forward to seeing you there! Please watch your e-mail (sent 10/16), our website, and other forms of communication for upcoming information about how to attend the meeting. You can also find advance registration info for the meeting at the end of my report.

We’ve been working to fill our open positions on the Board and in other areas. I would like to welcome and thank the following members for their willingness to serve the region in the following manner:

Executive Board:

Janet Spink Archivist

Liz Stevenson Parliamentarian

Lauren Stoner Secretary

AMTA National Committee Representatives:

Scott Horowitz Standards of Clinical Practice Committee

Michelle Muth Professional Advocacy Committee

Leah Oswanski Judicial Review Board

Shelby Reynolds Reimbursement Committee

Suzanne Sorel Academic Program Approval Committee

MAR-AMTA Committees:

Kendra Ray Research Committee

Shawna Vernisie Constitution and Bylaws Revision Committee

Deepest thanks to all those who have entered into these roles! We are still looking to fill a few positions including: Historian, Newsletter Editor, Regional Events Planner, and Regional Exhibits Coordinator. If you would like to know more about these opportunities, please reach out to me at [email protected]

In addition to the appointments and committee members above, I am excited to share the news that MAR-AMTA has hired a webmaster to work on revamping the MAR-AMTA website (mar-amta.org) to make it more accessible and user-friendly for all. Joseph Madejski is our new Webmaster, and he is ready to rock! If you have any ideas or suggestions for the website, please feel free to send an email to myself, our PR Chair Cheyanna Eagle ([email protected]) or to Joseph at [email protected]. I can’t wait to see what our website looks like in the near future!

I wish you the best as we move into the last quarter of the year. Please feel free to reach out at any time at [email protected].

Bob Miller, MS, MT-BC

ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT EMAIL ADDRESSES

A couple of years ago we transitioned our e-mail addresses to G Suite allowing us to have @maramta.org e-mail addresses. This was, in part, to allow us to transition files and information for each new person stepping into their regional positions. With the transition to our new board in July we have uncovered issues related to the e-mail addresses. While we have updated the names associated with the e-mail addresses on our end, we have not found a way to change how these e-mail accounts are labeled within other inboxes. Beth Deyermond shifted into the Immediate Past President role and Bob Miller shifted into the President role. Bob still gets e-mail messages from those intending to contact Beth, not realizing that she has a new regional email address. This has been happening with many of the members of our 2021-2023 board.

We are asking everyone to please double check their contacts when contacting us. Make sure the e-mail you are writing is going to the intended e-mail address, not just the name, and if needed please update the associated name in your inbox contacts. We are hoping to find a more efficient system of making these updates before we transition to the next board in 2023.

Our apologies for the inconvenience that this has caused.

Greetings MAR Community,

I hope this message finds you well. I have been appreciating all I’ve learned about MAR and AMTA from fellow board members and from professionals and students in the music therapy community. I’m looking forward to getting to work with the Constitution and Bylaws committee. The board has approved Shawna Vernisie to join us in our work. I plan to work closely with the Anti-Oppression Ad Hoc committee and am grateful for the incredible work they have already done. Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] at any time with questions, suggestions, and concerns.

Immediate Past President's Report

Beth Deyermond, MA, MT-BC

Dear members and friends of the MAR-AMTA,

The crisp fall air has come to New York and fall colors are at their peak here in the Catskill mountains. Although I would like to say that things have slowed down a little, that hasn’t really happened and we have continued working busily to answer and address questions and concerns, while still moving forward and providing support for music therapists around the Region.

Within the role of the Immediate Past President, highlights include:

  • Nominating Committee

I am currently in the process of recruiting members to the committee to serve for the next two years. The nominating committee is responsible for presenting a slate of candidates for our biennial elections. Members of this committee will represent a diverse section of the membership in the areas of identity, location, and clinical practice. Information on expression of interest in serving on this committee will be coming out very soon.

  • Review of 2021 Election Process

Addressing inequities within our nominating and election procedures must be an ongoing process. We anticipate that changes and clarifications will continue to be presented to the membership many times in the upcoming years. A reflection/review of the 2021 election including intended/unintended consequences of anonymizing ballots, and questions and concerns surrounding the process of voting is in the planning stages. Members of the nominating committee will be involved in this and we will also be seeking members who would be interested in serving on this potential sub-committee. Information will be gathered using platforms such as online surveys and Town Hall style meetings. Past meetings that include member feedback on this topic will also be reviewed. A report on the findings and potential ideas and solutions will be provided to the membership prior to the next regular election (Spring 2023).

  • Election of Assembly Chair

The AMTA Assembly of Delegates is elected for a two year term that begins on January 1st of even numbered years. (The incoming delegation will be seated January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2023.) An important member of the MAR-AMTA Executive Board, the Assembly Chair is a non-voting position that serves as a liaison among the Executive Board, Assembly Delegates and Alternates, and the general membership. This position is unique in that it is not elected by the general membership, nor is it appointed by the regional President. Instead, in the late fall of odd numbered years, the Assembly-Elect Delegation elects one of the incoming Delegates as their Chair. The full Assembly-Elect (i.e., Delegates and Alternates) are eligible to vote in this election, but only Delegates are eligible to run for the position. The Immediate Past President is responsible for facilitating the upcoming election of Assembly Chair that will happen immediately following the 2022-2023 Assembly Elect meeting on November 10, 2021. Results of this election will be shared in late November.

I look forward to connecting with many of you at the upcoming AMTA Conference. As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns at [email protected]

Vice President for Membership Report

Clarissa Lacson, MA, MT-BC

In response to the Membership Survey about Connection Opportunities, I have organized a series of panel discussions on topics of interest to music therapists in the MAR-AMTA region. The first discussion will take place on October 28th from 11:30 - 1:00 PM, via Zoom. This will be a clinician-led panel discussion on music therapy with older adults. While we recognize the need to move away from population-centric language, we also acknowledge older adults as a potentially oppressed group. This panel brings many years of clinical wisdom on best ways to acknowledge and support the wholeness of older adults in how we approach our clinical practice as music therapists.

For the meeting information, please fill out the following form. This form will give you an opportunity to ask questions of the panelists in advance of the discussion: https://forms.gle/R4aSHu5gxBigBCWu8

We have topics for the next three discussion sessions: 1) Telehealth and best practices; 2) Anti-oppressive practice; and 3) A conversation between different generations of music therapists. Please be on the lookout for email and social media announcements regarding the timing of these sessions.

Thank you to all who participated in the September Town Hall meeting. Many important points were raised regarding the evaluation of the anonymous nomination process, as well as the decline in rates of membership in the MAR-AMTA. I am working on making the video of the Town Hall meeting available to view online, so please be on the lookout for email and social media posts about that. In our next Town Hall meeting, we would like to ask music therapists for feedback and suggestions for how to re-envision our regional conferences. If you have other topics that you would like to hear discussed, please email me at [email protected].

Many music therapists indicated an interest in learning more about state-specific licensure and music therapy recognition updates. I encourage you to read the Government Relations Chair report in this newsletter, and to get in touch with your state task force to discuss further questions. If you need contact information for your state task force, please email the Government Relations Chair (Stephenie Sofield) at [email protected], or the Government Relations Elect Chair (Tatyana Martin) at [email protected].

2021-2023 MAR Assembly Chair Report

Donna W. Polen, LCAT, MT-BC

Updates from recent Assembly of Delegates Meeting

The Assembly met on August 25, 2021. The main items of business addressed included:

  • Integrative Policies and Procedures Assembly (IPPA) Work Group: The final report and recommendations were submitted to the AMTA Board of Directors (BOD) at their mid-year meeting. Many of the recommendations will be implemented to ensure safety at the upcoming AMTA annual conference.

  • Update from the Ethics Board: A new AMTA legal team is reviewing our current Code of Ethics and Procedures. Proposed revisions to the Code of Ethics were sent to the DEI Committee on behalf of the BOD for review.

  • Assembly Bylaws Task Force (ABTF): The ABTF presented comprehensive proposed AMTA Bylaws revisions, including an addendum of terms and definitions. A Google doc was created to solicit feedback from the Assembly before sending the recommendations and feedback to the BOD for consideration as part of strategic planning.

  • Accessibility Work Group: The accessibility motion asks that a work group form to develop a process for creating a task force. The task force is the group that will work on a long-term approach to evaluating policies and procedures. The motion from February had been updated at the request of the Disabled Music Therapy Collective (DMTC). The deadlines have been removed in favor of updates at each Assembly meeting. The requested actions are still in progress. Anyone who is interested in having input or sharing the work on this topic should reach out to Assembly Speaker Angie Snell at: [email protected]

Several sessions and highlights will be available in November to ALL, not just those registered for the conference. Gratitude expressed to the IPPA for their report and recommendations regarding safety guidance for this conference.

Ming Yuan will work with Speaker Snell to create a Google doc for the Assembly to contribute their thoughts on this in advance of the next meeting on 10/12.
  • The Assembly Bylaws Task Force (ABTF) reported that they forwarded their AMTA Bylaws revisions recommendations, along with feedback from Assembly members, to the BOD for their consideration as part of upcoming strategic planning and governance review.

Treasurer Elect Report

Nina Alden, MA, MT-BC

Greetings MAR music therapists, and happy fall. It’s been a fairly quiet summer for us, but as we head into the new season we’ll start preparing for the fiscal year ahead. As we approach the Fall Business Meeting, we will start collecting info from the board and put together a budget for the fiscal year 2022. We’re planning on an in-person conference for 2022 and will most definitely be incurring more expenses in the coming months as a result. Online conferences for the past two years have allowed the financial health of the region to rebound, but we are still working on being as fiscally conservative and efficient as possible to protect the longevity of the region, as well as increase the resources we are able to provide to you, the members. We look forward to this task. If there are ever questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or Nina!

Continuing Education Report

Mary Claire Holliday, MS, MT-BC, LCAT

Hello everyone – I am the newly appointed chair for the MAR Continuing Education position. I would like to thank Clare for all of her great work in the past and for helping me transition into this role, and I look forward to working with many of you as well. One way that I can do that is by reading and helping to get scheduled CMTE’s that you would like to present. We currently are accepting presentations for the upcoming 2022 conference. Final deadline for submission has been extended to October 29, so you still have a few days to get proposals in. More information is available on the MAR website under the heading “continuing ed” and “conference,” but if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at continuingeducation.maramta.org.
