PARISH NEWS

A Night of Music, Love, and Laughter

We had a wonderful evening of Music, Love and Laughter with The Rev. Joshua Varner, Canon for Children and Youth. He had the children mesmerized with his music and story telling. And the adults learned a little something about generosity. Thank you Joshua!

This week Holy Comforter kicked off our annual stewardship campaign. I do environmental work for a living, so I naturally link the word "stewardship" not only to my tithe but also to caring for the environment. As Joshua Varner mentioned on Wednesday night, stewardship means to care for things. That means we are stewards or caretakers of our church, Holy Comforter - its building and its people, the wider Christian church, as well as the natural world (among other things). To steward either, we must allocate our time and our treasure - our efforts and our money toward it. This is actually one of the things I like so much about creation care - that it is so well linked to other aspects of how we act out our faith. Practicing creation care can actually help us be better stewards of our personal and church finances. When we stop spending money on disposable items, there is more money that we can allocate toward our local missions projects  and less going to landfill. When we stop spending money on inefficient fixtures or appliances, there is more money that we can spend to send the youth on pilgrimage  and less wasted water or emissions. When considering how your family will give in the coming year, I challenge you to consider what you're currently spending money on, and how that can better be used.

The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas , and established it on the rivers. Psalm 24:1-2

Gifts for the Christ Child

Each year we sponsor several families in need to help make their Christmas brighter for their children. If you are interested in 'adopting' a family, there is a box on the table in the foyer with a list of families and requests of gifts by the children. All requests do not need to be purchased. There are corresponding cards for each family and instructions on the back of the card. We ask that all gifts be at the Church by November 24th. Questions? Contact Robert Bargeron at [email protected]

Looking for LEMs (Lay Eucharistic Ministers)

Lay Eucharistic Ministers are persons who assist the clergy during the service, particularly in administering Holy Communion, leading prayers, and taking communion to the sick and homebound members of our church. If you have been confirmed in the Episcopal Church, you may serve in this office. If you are interested in serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, please contact Court Hooper at [email protected].

Volunteering is easy, each month you receive a copy of the Activities Schedule and simply choose the dates and activities you wish to participate in. Questions? Christmas Cards Update: Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Christmas Cards for Inmates at Leath.  We collected more than enough cards to insure that every inmate at Leath receives one.  The left over cards will be saved to use next year.  There is a container to collect the cards that have been signed with a message in the foyer.  Please return those completed cards in the bag that they were in with the word "complete" written on a piece of paper inside the bag.  Thank you so much for those who helped with this project through the donation of cards or helping prepare them for delivery.

Cooper Cards Update:   Our initial meeting for Cooper Cards was attended by 10 volunteers on Sept. 30 to learn about this ministry.  Those who attended were asked to prayerfully consider corresponding with incarcerated individuals on a regular basis.  As of now we have identified 15 individuals in prisons within the U.S. who would welcome mail.  Most of these either receive no mail or very little at this time.  Our hope is that the number of volunteers will grow and we can reach those who have been forgotten.  If you were unable to attend but would like to learn more about his ministry or participate with our correspondence, please contact Linda Bargeron [email protected] or 706-267-8668.  We invite anyone who would like to visit a prisoner through cards and letters to join our team.

It is that time again to start baking cookies for Kairos.  Our upcoming weekend is Oct. 24 - 27, 2019 and we need lots of cookies.  Please help us achieve our goal of 150 dozen cookies for the weekend.  Cookies are given to every resident at the facility each night we are there (4).  We love home made but we also accept cookies bought in stores.  The only requirements are that they not have any fruit in them and no sprinkles, icing or powdered sugar on top.  Nuts are ok.  They also love rice crispy treats.  Just bring them to church on or before Sunday, Oct. 20.  We will see that they arrive safely.

Many thanks to our generous supporters.  Any questions just talk to Cheryl Spessert [email protected] or Linda Bargeron [email protected].

Also we need lots of prayers.  Please sign up to pray for our weekend.  Copies of the prayer vigil will be in the church foyer soon and also with Cheryl and Linda.  These prayers can be done anywhere you are.  This is not a vigil that will be done at the church like our Easter vigil.

Acolyte Training and Movie

Saturday, November 2nd at 1pm we meet at the church for an acolyte training session. All acolytes and parents are encouraged to attend. Following the training, we will watch a movie and have snacks. Questions? Contact Morgan Hooper at [email protected].
