Westland Releases List of Tentative Closings/Cancellations; Opens COVID-19 Informational Hotline
Westland, MI (March 13, 2020) - Due to a growing number of confirmed coronavirus COVID-19 cases in the United States, a number of officials have issued emergency health declarations, including Governor Whitmer in Michigan.  In an effort to slow the spread of this virus in Michigan, Governor Whitmer ordered the closure of all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, to students starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5.  This includes Wayne-Westland and Livonia Schools.   

Pursuant to the Governor's recommendation to implement social distancing measures and to cancel or postpone large gatherings, the following City buildings/community events will close or be postponed (all closings and postponements will be reevaluated and updated as the situation progresses):

  • Friendship Senior Center will close at 5 p.m. on March 13, 2020 until March 31, 2020
    • AAARP will suspend its tax services at the Friendship Center at 5pm on March 13, 2020
    • Meals on Wheels deliveries are not affected at this time
  • Historical Village Park will close through March 31, 2020
  • Westland Public Library will close through March 31, 2020 during which time all published programs, events and classes will be cancelled
  • Mike Modano Ice Arena will remain open for leagues (until further notice) however  all Public Skating (Glow Skate, Open Skate, Sticks & Pucks, Learn to Skate, Timbits) will be cancelled through March 31, 2020
    • Hockey Night in Westland (scheduled for March 20, 2020) is postponed
  • Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center (JBCVC) will remain open (until further notice) however, the Norwayne Boxing Gym will close until March 31, 2020 and the following programs/events will be cancelled:
    • Housing Commission participant briefing (scheduled for March 24, 2020) is rescheduled for April 24, 2020
    • Salvation Army Basketball (on Fridays) will cancel for the remaining March dates
    • Learning Lab will remain closed until Wayne Westland Community Schools re-open
    • Basketball Clinic (scheduled April 7, 2020 - April 9, 2020) is cancelled
    • HOPE Clinic Senior Exercise is cancelled for the remaining March dates
  • Westland City Hall will remain open and fully operational (until further notice) and trash and recycling pick up will remain unaffected.
  • Chamber of Commerce Heath Expo (scheduled for March 14, 2020) is postponed

Mayor William R. Wild has appointed Fire Chief, Michael Stradtner as Westland's COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.  Chief Stradtner is maintaining constant communication with Federal, State and County Officials and has also opened an informational hotline to answer individual questions and concerns regarding the virus at (734)793-9261 For the most current information and updates on the virus and closures/cancellations around the community, please visit
