Census Closes October 31
60,000 Nebraska residents (3%) have yet to complete U.S. Census forms. A group called “Last Push Nebraska” estimates each unfilled application represents $1,500 in lost federal support. The latest outreach is focused on North and South Omaha.

The Consulate of Mexico in Omaha informs the community that from October 1st through the 10th, the Twentieth Edition of Binational Health Week will be held, under the theme 20 Years of Brotherhood, Binational Health.
Despite the conditions and challenges imposed on us by the pandemic created by COVID-19, and thanks to the efforts of the Consulate's Health Window and allied agencies, this year, within the framework of Binational Health Week 2020, the topics that will be addressed are:

High Speed Internet Fast Tracked
As COVID-19 began shuttering businesses and government offices in March, the FCC led an effort with telecommunications companies to Keep Americans Connected.
By April, the number of telecommuting Americans had risen from 31% to 62% (Gallup report). The United States was fortunate to maintain bandwidth unlike other nations, but the U.S. Chamber says more is needed.
Since 2016, the broadband gap across the nation has closed from 34 million to 18 million Americans unconnected to high-speed internet service.
One major roadblock is accurate mapping to determine service levels across the nation. The Broadband DATA Act signed earlier in 2020 is designed to bolster mapping, but the $65 million price tag remains unfunded.

Indeed, whether we focus on maintaining leadership in healthcare, education, our key industries, technology, or infrastructure, our efforts are likely interlinked. Nebraska has a pro-growth plan in the Blueprint Nebraska report (blueprint-nebraska.org), its 15 growth initiatives and its related benchmarks for measuring success. This report reflects the input of literally thousands of people statewide and transcends politics and geography.

Ag Takes Hit During Outbreak
Net agricultural income is expected to decline 23% in Nebraska in 2020, according to a study published by the Platte Institute and Nebraska Farm Bureau. Half of the income earned may be thanks to federal government assistance.
Gasoline consumption was down 36% at one point, and meat processing facilities were operating at 60-70% capacity. Total losses were predicted at $3.7 billion (without federal assistance.)

First-Time Unemployment Claims Grow
The last two weeks saw larger increases in first-time unemployment claims. In the week ending September 19, claims were above 3,000 for the first time since August 8. Continuing unemployment claims fell more than 2,000 to 20,331.
