Wholesome Desire
August 2020
I've been teaching classes every single weekday during July. It has been a spiritual, emotional bootcamp and beyond. The classes included Infinite Potential, Immersion Groups, Extraordinary Leadership Program, Beatitudes - Transforming Heart and Mind through New Perspectives on Jesus' Teachings, The Five Invitations - Discovering What Death Can Teach Us About Living Fully, and Critical Conversation Skills.
The classes are quite complementary and correlating. There are many common threads from the teachings that include Blessed are those who have purpose for their lives, desire and effort to remain open, allowing and aligned with the flow of life, practice gratitude and altruism, bring their whole selves to life, don't wait, don't know or claim to know, practice, practice, practice, spiritual communion and connection to "inherit" peace of mind, grace, higher thinking, meaning and a place to rest in the middle of all things.

In Turning To One Another (2002) Margaret Wheatley writes:

  1. People are the solution to the problems that confront us. Technology is not the solution, although it can help. We are the solution--we as generous, open-hearted people who want to use our creativity and caring on behalf of other human beings and all life.
  2. We humans want to be together. We only isolate ourselves when we're hurt by others, but alone is not our natural state. Today, we live in an unnatural state, separating ourselves rather than being together.
  3. We become hopeful when somebody tells the truth. I don't know why this is but I experience it often.
  4. Truly connecting with another human being gives us joy. The circumstances that create this connection matter. Even those who work side-by-side in the worst natural disaster or crisis recall that experience as memorable. They are surprised to feel joy in the midst of tragedy, but they always do.
  5. We have to slow down. Nothing will change for the better until we do. We need time to think, to learn, to get to know each other. We are losing these great human capacities in the speed-up of modern life, and it is killing us.
This all seems to sum up what I've been reading, pondering, applying, practicing, and committing to for decades and in high velocity this past month.
Where can you find new ways to approach your troubles?

Where can you tell the truth to you and others and tell it quicker?

Where can you connect with others to serve yourSELF and humanity?

What would a day or ½ of sabbath/rest look like for you?
"Finding rest in the middle of all things is a practice."

The cure for despair is not hope. It's discovering what we want to do about something we care about and doing it.
Here's a story of a young man that I was inspired by this month and supported his work. Most of my donations go to a variety of folks who are DOING something about what they care about. Jack is a shining example:

Here's his family's responses to me and their updates:

Martha,

Thank you for reaching out to support our son Jack's efforts to raise money for the Black Lives Matter movement. Between his lawn mowing and the generosity of people like you, Jack has raised more than $5,700! This week, he donated $2,925 to Black Lives Matter and $2,850 locally to Action St. Louis

We can't possibly put a value on what Jack has learned from this, which is that if you look past the negativity, you will see helpers all over the world supporting each other and this important cause. Thank you for encouraging him to stand up for what's right and for recognizing a kid trying to make a difference. He, and we, will never forget this.

Jack's donation to the national Black Lives Matter organization was online, but here's a picture of his in-person donation to Action St. Louis this week.

With gratitude, Jack, Patrick & Kelli Powers

Dear Martha,

Thank you for reaching out with words of encouragement for Jack. He has been keeping busy in the neighborhood and has raised $1,200 so far! He is planning to split his proceeds between Black Lives Matter and Action St. Louis. We truly appreciate you encouraging a kid trying to do good and your interest in supporting a great cause. We are saving every positive note he receives to remind him what a difference one good deed can make.

If you would like to donate to Jack's fund, we are happy to accept via Venmo at @kelli-powers-2, PayPal at [email protected] or CashApp at $patrickpowers59.

Thank you!
Jack's parents, Patrick and Kelli

You may not agree with Jack and his causes --- fantastic. What will you work toward being the change for? I support you too.

My biggest takeaway so far for July bootcamp is this: Wholesome Desire - the desire to be free; to know what is true; and be completely ourselves. Onward and Upward - Let Freedom Ring Again and Again.

Check out the Fall Series of classes. August includes: Twelve Steps as Spiritual Practice and I am so sparked and ignited to lead groups through Power of 8 Intentions and Altruistic Serving in small groups. Here's a glimpse:  https://lynnemctaggart.com/the-power-of-8/

"A life built upon Sabbath is contented because in rhythms of rest we discover our time is full of the holiness of God. Rest provides fine-tuning for hearing God's messages amidst the static of life."
~ Shelly Miller, Rhythms of Rest: Finding the Spirit of Sabbath in a Busy World
"One day a week I seek to rest
from earthly toil and sorrow.
Revitalized, I find the strength
to battle new tomorrows."

Dare you/we throw away Self Help books? Maybe not that extreme. Join me and see what is infinite potential as you, through you, for you. All my love,

P.S. Thank you all for your love and prayers about my "stay put" solution. I have leased a home near Nashville, TN for one year. As many of you know I've been traveling for 16 consecutive years without a place of my own. I've had nothing in my name and was traveling and living in hotels, retreat centers, staying with friends and colleagues, and shared spaces. I'm clearly guided now to stay put. Period.

Many have reached out to offer to gift me or support me in the "move in" housewarming, as I am starting from scratch. I plan on keeping it very simple and minimal, and especially comfortable and practical. It's too early to identify much need yet and if you're inclined to be part of this creation I'd say send a gift card to Big Lots, Amazon or something similar. Regretfully I can't be any more specific. Somebody has already sent me light bulbs, batteries and q-tips. Blessings abound.

My post office box remains the same. PO Box 1081 Louisville KY 40201 for this time.

It will eventually be an "oasis". Love and appreciation. Martha
