Floodgate Safety

The City of Garland is dedicated to the safety of each resident. One way we do this is by ensuring that street flood gates are closed and secured when water covers the roadways. The streets where floodgates are located within the city are:

Brand Road between Campbell Road and the Richardson city limits
Campbell Road at Rowlett Creek
Castle Drive between Woodmont Avenue and Hickox Road
Holford Road at Spring Creek
Miles Road between Pleasant Valley Road and Castle Drive
Naaman School Road at Spring Creek

Previously, Pleasant Valley Road at Rowlett Creek was a location that was prone to flooding; however, that issue was eliminated with the construction of a new bridge in 2018.

Street floodgates are used as barriers to prevent traffic through low water crossings. Any time a street floodgate is closed, avoid driving through that area. Here are some reminders to consider during a heavy rainfall:

Typically the number of potholes increases, so drive slowly because they may not always be visible.

The street floodgates are often closed even after the rain has stopped because the water may not have receded from the roadway. A Street Department crew member will open the floodgates once the water has subsided, the roadway has been cleared of drift material and it is safe for travel.

Within the next month the Street Department will have illuminated signage attached to the gates on Campbell Road and Naaman School Road as an additional warning feature. We will continue to evaluate the need for additional warning signage at the other locations.

Details About the Bond Program Still Available

Garland voters will consider eight bond propositions in the May 4 General Election.

Proposition A relates directly to Streets and Transportation. This proposition includes $122,250,000 to finance street improvements including, sidewalks, alleys, bridges, intersections, screening walls, streetscape, wayfinding, fixtures, entryway signs and other traffic flow improvements.

Proposition G includes $6 million to construct, improve, renovate and equip existing municipal facilities. Anticipated improvements include Street Department facility renovation and Transportation Maintenance and Operations Facility renovation.
