"Love Will Make You Brave"
It's hard to take a deep breath these days, much less find the time and focus and faith to practice deep listening. Nevertheless, that's exactly what we are called to do. Where is truth, among all the events, fears, information/disinformation swirling around us? Can we let love guide us?

Join us for online worship at uusociety.org/worship-and-music/online-sunday-worship at 10 a.m. All services are also available on our YouTube channel

Family Chapel in the Garden
Margo Whitcomb, Faith Development Assistant

This Sunday and next, October 4 and 11, 10-11 a.m.
Families with children are invited to gather outdoors in the Memorial Garden for Family Chapel, much like those we had in the Community Room on first Sundays in the past. Children will help Erika lead this short outdoor worship, centered on the October theme of Deep Listening, followed by creative activities and active games.

Registration is encouraged and very helpful for our planning. Same-day registrants will be accommodated as space allows. Group size will be limited to 20. Masks are required.

Tuesday, October 6, 7-8 p.m. - Update meeting via Zoom
We are a volunteer group of individuals who have been
working diligently to support a local mother and child while they are in the legal process of seeking asylum in our country. We have helped several additional families in other ways, too.

Come to celebrate the good work that we have done together in the past year of the network's existence. You will hear updates, participate in Q&A, and learn about the ongoing need for donations and how you can do something to help this family and others begin a new life in our community.

Register in advance at this linkAfter registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

Questions - Text or call Jan, 802-488-4041.
Find more information about the Chittenden Asylum Seekers Assistance Network on our Facebook page. Thank you!

MAG Meeting - October 13
MAG is a group of leaders of the First UU Society. For purposes of this group, we define a leader as anyone who leads or chairs a committee, team, or any other group at the Society. This group meets quarterly and has generally had a purpose of leadership development. This is also often a place where the Society makes announcements about upcoming events, changes, initiatives, etc.

Our first gathering of the 2020/2021 year will be on Tuesday, October 13, 5:30-7 p.m.

This year we have decided that our motto is going to be:  Less Agenda...More Joy, Replenishing, & Conversation!! Yes, we will still have important information to pass on, but we promise to allow space in the agenda to allow for meaningful conversation and sharing.

Zoom Link: bit.ly/33SEhRN (This will be the same link for all MAG meetings.)

Please arrive on time and feel free to snack or eat dinner while we are meeting. We are looking forward to gathering with you all.

Update: Ramp and Deck Construction
David Foster and Chip Patullo
Dear Members and Friends,

What's happened to the ramp and deck at the Meeting House? For about one month it was completely gone! Now it is reappearing, actually quite quickly.

Last year the landing of the ramp started to develop bumps that became trip hazards and made it difficult for wheelchairs and walkers to pass over. I crawled under the ramp and noticed that the metal hangers that hold the support beams were all rusted out. Years of salting the ramp had taken a toll. As a temporary measure, I jacked up the sagging support structure and screwed it back together; the wooden support beams were still in good shape. The Property Team then made the decision to pull up all of the Trex decking boards that are walked on, reinforce the entire structure, then install new Trex decking. This was to happen this year.

Last winter, however, the Trex boards at the entrance of the ramp began bowing down in the middle. It was also noted that the landing in the middle of the ramp was actually not wide enough to make proper turns and did not meet current code standards; neither did the height of the side railings and the spacing between the side balusters. Early this year the decision was made to pull the whole ramp down and build a new one to proper standards and without the metal support hangers that were prone to rust.

Researching the history showed that the original ramp was built in the fall of 1987 and replaced a chair lift that traversed the steps leading up to the double doors. Around 2005 the ramp and deck were rebuilt with new support beams and the Trex synthetic decking boards.

Warren Baker, a new Property Team member, organized the demolition. Chip Patullo, Property Team co-chair, drew up the new plans, submitted them for zoning changes and approval, and is leading the installation of the new ramp. Other Property Team members are helping Chip hands-on with the new installation. We are using stainless steel screws that are rust-resistant! Building the ramp ourselves lowers the installation cost from an estimated $25,000 to around $10,000. The coincidental closing of the Meeting House due to Covid-19 has actually made the timing of the ramp and deck rebuild ideal.

David McFeeters, Facilities Manager
